Features and Services

Kamatera is an infrastructure provider. It doesn’t sell shared hosting, domains or a site builder. You rent virtual machines and the parts around them, then manage them yourself or pay extra for help. Its parent, The OMC Group, has sold cloud services since 1995, and the Kamatera brand dates from 1996.

What You Can Rent

• Four CPU types – Type A shares a physical CPU thread with other customers. Type B gets a dedicated thread and Type D a dedicated core. Type T bursts and bills extra above 10% average use.
• Block storage, load balancers, firewalls and private networks – building blocks for bigger setups.
• Managed service – USD 50 a month for system-level monitoring and help, acting only when you ask.
• Reseller accounts and cloud desktops – for agencies and remote Windows users.

Features Customers Actually Mention

The configurator is the reason people pick Kamatera. You choose CPU type, core count, RAM, disk and location separately. A server can have 8 GB of RAM on one core if that’s what your app needs. The calculator lists 36 operating system images, from Ubuntu 26.04 and Debian 13 to Windows Server 2025.

A marketplace installs ready images such as cPanel, Plesk, CyberPanel, CloudPanel, Docker, n8n and WordPress. Port 25, which mail servers use to send email, isn’t blocked by default. That’s rarer than it should be. The catch is reverse DNS, the record that ties an IP address back to your domain, which receiving mail servers check. We cover it under customer experience.

Scaling is quick. Customers on Trustpilot and Reddit describe adding RAM or cores without moving to a new server. One Reddit user running about 100 Windows machines called the platform solid and flexible, and said the only problem was cost.

Data Center Locations

The pricing calculator offers 21 locations. Nine are in North America: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Santa Clara, Seattle and Toronto. Seven are in Europe, one is in Tel Aviv, and four are in Asia-Pacific: Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney. The European sites are Amsterdam, Bucharest, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Milan and Stockholm.

Kamatera’s own count is higher. Its Bucharest announcement calls the new site its “25th location worldwide”, but only 21 can be picked when you build a server. There’s nothing in South America or Africa.

Performance Expectations

We measured how fast Kamatera’s network answers, using Globalping, a free public network of measurement probes. On 1 October 2026 we timed TCP connections to port 443 on Kamatera’s own speed-test servers in five cities. Every probe ran on a home or mobile internet connection, spread across 10 countries.

TCP connection time is how long it takes to open a connection to the server. It’s a close stand-in for network round-trip time. We switched from ping because every target dropped most ping packets. This measures network reach only, not how fast a website loads on Kamatera. Results are in milliseconds (ms).

Where Kamatera has a nearby site, it’s fast: under 25 ms in seven of the ten cities. The new Bucharest site answered Iasi in 19.1 ms, against 42.1 ms for Amsterdam. The gaps show up where Kamatera has no site. Sao Paulo’s best result was 132.6 ms and Cape Town’s was 172.8 ms.

Uptime is murkier. Kamatera’s pricing, cloud server and Windows VPS pages advertise a 99.95% uptime guarantee. We found no independent uptime monitoring for Kamatera this year, so we can’t tell you how close it comes.

Customer Experience

On Trustpilot, Kamatera has a TrustScore of 4.2 from 387 reviews. Of those, 262 are five-star and 90 are one-star, with only 35 in between. People tend to love it or quit angry.

Kamatera invites customers to leave reviews, and Trustpilot records which reviews came from an invitation. We sorted the 89 reviews posted between 1 October 2025 and 25 September 2026. The 31 invited reviews averaged 4.90: 29 five-star, 1 four-star, 1 three-star and nothing lower. The 58 organic reviews averaged 3.97: 42 five-star, 1 three-star, 2 two-star and 13 one-star.

Why such a gap? Every one-star review in that year came from someone who found Trustpilot on their own. Neither group is fake. Companies usually send invitations once a ticket is closed, so those reviews sample customers right after things went well.

What Customers Praise

We searched the 71 five-star reviews from the same year for recurring words. Support leads by far, followed by flexibility and stability.

Support that answers. 50 of the 71 mention support, help or quick answers, often naming the staff member. Kamatera also replied to 199 of the newest 200 Trustpilot reviews, praise and complaints alike.

Configurations that fit. 24 mention flexibility, scaling or custom configuration. One reviewer liked creating several servers with different specs on one account.

Servers that stay up. 20 mention stability, reliability or uptime. A few long-time customers say they’ve never seen downtime.

Common Complaints

We read all 15 one- and two-star reviews from that year. Six were about billing: charges after cancelling, a credit balance that drained faster than expected, or suspension notices sent while the account was in credit. The billing FAQ above explains part of it.

Three came from people who aren’t customers at all. They received spam or phishing from Kamatera’s IP ranges and say abuse reports went unanswered. Three more described outages or support that couldn’t fix a technical fault. Two said Kamatera refused to set reverse DNS for a mail server, and one said a trial account was locked as “fraud” within days.

Community Feedback on Reddit

Reddit says more about how Kamatera feels to use than about outright failures. We found 205 posts that mention it, 106 of them since October 2025. Many are promotions, though. Near-identical posts advertising up to USD 100 of free credit went up in three deal subreddits on 29 July 2026. That’s marketing, not feedback.

Real users are mixed. A July 2026 comment called Kamatera “ok, no problem with them” after a move from Hetzner. A June 2025 comparison of four hosts rated Kamatera the worst to use, citing a dated control panel and awkward setup. It did praise the speed test results. A later reply agreed, adding clunky SSH key handling (the keys used to log in remotely) and confusing pricing.

The sharpest warnings repeat the Trustpilot themes. One user in April 2026 said they had chased a phishing sender on Kamatera’s network for over a year. Another in February 2026 forgot to cancel a trial and found a bill of about USD 100. A January 2026 post said reverse DNS was refused because the site wasn’t a “full, real website”.

That last point matches Kamatera’s own rules. Reverse DNS is set by ticket only. The site must be hosted on Kamatera and be a full, real website with a valid SSL certificate (the certificate behind HTTPS). The account must also have no prior abuse reports.

Support Quality

Kamatera lists 24/7 technical support by phone and email, with numbers in the US and UK, and says customers can also use chat. Sales has its own phone numbers. Billing is reachable by email only, which matters because billing is the top complaint.

Account locks are the other support pain point. Kamatera’s FAQ admits its fraud checks sometimes lock legitimate accounts. Unlocking needs a short video of you holding a photo ID plus a photo of your card, and review takes one to two business days. Plan for that before you put a client’s site on a new account.

When to Use Kamatera

Kamatera makes sense when you know what you need and want to pay for exactly that.

Good Fits

Developers who want an odd shape of server: lots of RAM on few cores, or the reverse. Fixed-plan hosts can’t do that.

Short projects and test environments: hourly servers bill by the minute. Delete one and the meter stops, apart from the invoice for usage so far.

Audiences in North America, Europe, Israel or Asia-Pacific: our measurement found fast answers near each of Kamatera’s sites, and Bucharest now covers Romania and its neighbours.

Windows servers: Windows Server is a flat USD 19 extra regardless of core count, so bigger Windows machines get relatively cheaper.

You’ll Like It If

• You hate renewal jumps, since Kamatera has no promotional rate to lose.
• You want to test first, since the 30-day trial covers a server worth up to USD 100.
• You need Port 25 open for a mail server, as long as you meet the reverse DNS conditions.

When NOT to Use Kamatera

Some of Kamatera’s limits are about skills, others about the contract.

Look Elsewhere If

This is your first website: there’s no site builder, no bundled control panel, and cPanel costs extra. A shared hosting plan with tools built in will be easier and cheaper.

Email delivery is critical: reverse DNS comes with conditions, and three of last year’s one-star reviews came from people receiving spam sent from Kamatera’s IP ranges. A dedicated email hosting service avoids both problems.

Your visitors are in South America or Africa: Kamatera has no site on either continent. Our probes in Sao Paulo and Cape Town never got below 132.6 ms.

You run heavy traffic from Asia-Pacific: Hong Kong, Sydney, Tokyo and Singapore servers get 1 TB a month, not the 5 TB shown on the plan cards.

Red Flags

• You often cancel mid-month: monthly servers bill the full month from the 1st.
• You need an uptime promise you can enforce: the SLA lets Kamatera reject any claim (see the transparency section).
• You need billing help by phone: billing is email only.

Kamatera Plans and Pricing

All prices here come from Kamatera’s USD pricing page and calculator, read on 1 October 2026 for a New York server on monthly billing. The page shows no tax line. There’s no promotional rate: a server costs the same in its twelfth month as in its first. That flat pricing is a real strength.

Cancellation warning: Kamatera bills monthly servers from the 1st of each month. Cancel a USD 4 server on the 2nd and you still owe the full USD 4 for that month. The same rule applies at every price. Kamatera’s FAQ advises terminating servers before the 1st.

The Three Plan Cards

The pricing page now shows three ready-made servers. All three come with 20 GB of NVMe storage (a fast type of SSD) and 5 TB of traffic.

• Basic, USD 4/mo: 1 vCPU (virtual CPU core) of Type A, 1 GB RAM.
• Standard, USD 25/mo: 2 vCPU of Type B, 2 GB RAM.
• Pro, USD 39/mo: 2 vCPU of Type B, 4 GB RAM.

Notice the jump from Basic to Standard. Both Standard and Pro use Type B, which Kamatera labels “Recommended” because each vCPU gets its own CPU thread. Build the same RAM on Type A in the calculator and it costs far less.

Custom Servers

Here’s the clearest example. A Type A server with 2 vCPU, 4 GB and 40 GB costs USD 19. The Pro card has the same cores and RAM, half the disk, and costs USD 39. You pay USD 20 more for a dedicated thread. That’s worth it for a busy database, and wasted on a small blog.

Add-ons change the picture just as much. Daily backups lift that USD 19 server to USD 23.50. Windows Server lifts it to USD 38.

Add-Ons and Hidden Costs

• Windows Server: a flat USD 19 a month extra, whether the server has 2, 4 or 8 vCPU. Windows needs at least 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM.
• Daily backups: kept for up to 14 days. They added USD 3 to the USD 4 server and USD 4.50 to the USD 19 one.
• Control panels: cPanel Admin (5 accounts) added USD 35, and Plesk Web Admin added USD 22, on a 1 vCPU, 2 GB server.
• Managed service: USD 50 a month, so the USD 4 server becomes USD 54.
• Extra storage and traffic: USD 0.05 per GB per month and USD 0.01 per GB.
• Powered-off hourly servers: still charged a small hourly fee for disk and IP address.
• Unused deposits: after six months idle, Kamatera charges 2% of the deposit per month and deletes it after 30 months.

Traffic is the trap that’s easiest to miss. The plan cards show 5 TB for every city in their location menu. Kamatera’s own FAQ says servers in Hong Kong, Sydney, Tokyo and Singapore get 1 TB a month.

Free Trial and the Fine Print

New accounts get 30 days on one server worth up to USD 100, with 1 TB of traffic. A valid credit card is required. If card verification fails, Kamatera asks for a refundable USD 10 deposit instead. Forget to delete the trial server and billing simply starts.

There’s also a contract point. Kamatera’s terms let it change prices “at any time”, effective immediately, even for customers who bought a longer term. Flat pricing today isn’t a promise about next year.

Pricing Verdict

For Linux servers on Type A, Kamatera is cheap and honest: USD 4 for 1 GB, USD 19 for 4 GB, and the same price every month. It gets expensive once you add Windows, cPanel, backups or Type B threads. Price your full build in the calculator before you compare it with anyone else. Don’t hold out for Black Friday: we found no Kamatera Black Friday offer in 2024 or 2025, on its site or in archive copies.

Kamatera Transparency Score

We graded how clearly Kamatera presents what buyers need, not whether the terms are generous.

• Company Information: Good – the site names its leadership and the parent group, and the terms name Kamatera Inc. as a US company. No street address appears anywhere on the site.
• Pricing Transparency: Good – every configuration and most add-ons are priced live in the calculator, and there’s no renewal markup. The 1 TB limit in four cities appears only in an FAQ.
• Technical Documentation: Limited – CPU claims disagree across pages: “Xeon Platinum/Cascade Lake” on pricing, “Xeon Platinum/Ice Lake” in the FAQ, “Xeon Gold/Ice Lake” on the about page.
• Terms & Policies: Limited – the SLA contradicts the sales pages, and it hands Kamatera full discretion over every claim.

The SLA is where this matters most. It defines 99.9% availability as up to 8 hours of downtime a year. That’s not the 99.95% advertised elsewhere on the site.

If Kamatera misses that target, the credit is one free month of the failed service, up to USD 5,000, once a year. You must claim in writing within 14 days. Then come the exclusions. They cover “any outage or stoppage of network connectivity or infrastructure” and, finally, anything “at Kamatera’s sole discretion and for any reason”.

The terms dated 1 September 2026 add two more points. The customer is now “solely responsible for all security” inside its own server. Kamatera’s liability is capped at USD 5,000 or 12 months of fees, whichever is lower, replacing the earlier one-month cap.

Overall Transparency: Kamatera is open about prices and closed about guarantees. Treat 99.95% as marketing and the SLA as the real deal.

Alternatives to Kamatera

Each alternative below fixes one gap from the section above. Prices were read on 1 October 2026 and show no tax line.

For South America and Africa: Vultr

Vultr runs 33 cloud regions, including Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Santiago and Mexico City. Its Regular Cloud Compute plans cost USD 5.00 for 1 vCPU, 1 GB and 25 GB. The 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 80 GB plan costs USD 20.00. That’s a dollar more than Kamatera at each size. You get more disk and nearby sites for those visitors, but less traffic: 1 TB and 3 TB against Kamatera’s 5 TB.

For an Easier Start: DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean’s Basic servers cost USD 6.00 for 1 GB with 25 GiB of disk. The 2 vCPU, 4 GiB plan with 80 GiB costs USD 24.00. You pay a little more than at Kamatera. In return you get a simpler control panel and fixed plans that are easy to compare.

For a Panel-First VPS: Hostinger

On a 2-year term, Hostinger charges USD 6.49 a month for its KVM 1 VPS. For that you get one vCPU, 50 GB of NVMe disk and 4 GB of memory. It renews at USD 11.99, so check the second-term cost. It suits buyers who want a guided panel more than a configurator.

Vultr and DigitalOcean also publish hourly rates, so you can test either for a day the way you’d test Kamatera.

Buy Kamatera if you can run a server yourself and want to choose every component. Delete servers before the 1st, keep your own backups, and read the SLA before you promise anyone uptime. On Trustpilot, invited reviewers rated it 4.90 over the past year while organic reviewers gave 3.97.

Pick Vultr if your visitors are in South America or Africa, and DigitalOcean if you’d rather learn on a simpler panel. Beginners building a first site should skip cloud servers and start with shared hosting.
