Contabo rents a server with 4 vCPU cores and 8 GB of RAM for USD 5.28 a month. netcup and InterServer both charge more than twice that for 8 GB. The catch is in how you pay, and in who helps when something breaks.
This review draws on Contabo’s own price catalogue, its terms, its help centre, its status page, archived copies of its site, Trustpilot and Reddit. We didn’t buy a server or run benchmarks. What most Contabo reviews skip is the payment math. The headline rate needs a 24-month term, and customers outside Germany pay all 24 months on day one.
Our verdict: Contabo scores 4.0 out of 5 in our analysis of 9,176 customer reviews. It wins on hardware per dollar, and its month-to-month price is only 25% above its best term rate. The most common complaints are slow support, servers that stop responding, and data lost after a cancellation or a missed payment. It suits people who can run Linux alone and keep their own backups.

Contabo raised its entry Cloud VPS from EUR 4.50 to EUR 5.50 a month in June 2026, making every review that quotes EUR 4.50 stale. Archived copies of its VPS page date the change to between 4 and 19 June. On 29 July 2026 it also renamed its whole VPS range. Reviews written before then use plan names you won’t find on the order page.

Features and Services
Contabo sells mostly unmanaged servers: you get root access (full administrator control) and install everything yourself. There’s no shared web hosting anymore. Its pricing page now lists only VPS, storage servers and dedicated machines, so any guide describing Contabo cPanel shared plans is out of date.
Hosting Types Offered
Contabo’s blog post of 29 July 2026 split the VPS range into three lines. Existing customers keep their old plans, according to the same post.
- Core VPS (formerly Cloud VPS): shared vCPU cores and SSD storage, from 4 cores and 8 GB of RAM. A shared vCPU is a virtual core that several customers’ servers take turns on.
- Performance VPS (sold as Cloud VPS Plus): AMD EPYC chips with NVMe drives, SSDs on a quicker connection than the SATA kind. Plans start at 4 cores, 8 GB and 150 GB.
- Max Performance VPS (formerly Cloud VDS): cores and RAM reserved for your server alone, on AMD EPYC 7282 chips. Plans start at 6 virtual cores and 24 GB.
- Storage VPS: fewer cores and more disk, from 2 cores and 300 GB of SSD.
- Dedicated servers: whole physical machines, from a 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 7900 with 64 GB of RAM up to 64-core EPYC Turin servers.
- GPU VPS: an NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 card, from USD 1,199 a month.
The entry plan got smaller in the rename. In early June 2026 the Cloud VPS 10 came with 75 GB of NVMe or 150 GB of SSD storage. Its successor, the Cloud VPS 4, ships with 100 GB of SSD.

The old entry plan, with its storage row outlined: 75 GB NVMe or 150 GB SSD, then EUR 4.50 a month. Contabo’s VPS page, Wayback Machine capture of 4 June 2026.
Key Features Customers Highlight
Reviewers rarely mention features by name. They mention how much server they got for the money. Beyond that, a few details shape the day-to-day experience.
- Unlimited traffic, with a fair-use clause: incoming traffic is unmetered. But if usage is “exceptionally high or disruptive”, Contabo “reserves the right to throttle servers at its own discretion”. The entry port is capped at 200 Mbit/s, and the terms say Contabo “cannot guarantee” the bandwidth a single server actually gets.
- Automation tools: every VPS comes with an API (an interface your own scripts can call), a command-line tool and custom images. It also accepts cloud-init scripts, setup commands that run on first boot.
- One-click apps: n8n, Nextcloud, WireGuard, GitLab, Coolify and several AI agent images install free from the configurator.
- Snapshots: the entry plan includes 1 snapshot, a point-in-time copy of the server. Bigger Core plans get 2 or 3.
- DDoS protection and a firewall: both are included. A DDoS attack swamps a server with bogus requests until it stops answering; the protection tries to drop them first. One Reddit user recalls the protection switching a server off until an attack passed, but that was “a couple years ago”.
Data Center Locations
Contabo lists 11 locations in 9 regions. Europe is served from five data centers in Germany. The US has New York, St. Louis and Seattle. There are single sites in Portsmouth (UK), Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney and India.
Only the European Union region is free. Everywhere else adds a monthly fee to the entry plan: USD 1.30 for St. Louis or the UK, USD 1.60 for Seattle and USD 1.90 for New York. Sydney costs USD 2.65, India USD 3.00, Singapore USD 3.10 and Tokyo USD 3.15. Location matters for latency (the delay before a visitor’s browser gets a response), so pick the region closest to your users.
On 26 September 2026, Contabo’s own catalogue marked Singapore as out of stock for the entry plan. Its status page also announced a 14-hour power maintenance in Singapore 2 on 10 October 2026, with servers “temporarily unavailable”.
Performance Expectations
We found no independent benchmark we could cite with confidence, so this section rests on Contabo’s claims and user reports. The homepage promises “Award-winning reliability with 99.996% uptime”. Contabo’s terms promise less: 99.9% annual availability of the “physical connectivity” of its servers. That allows about 8.8 hours of downtime a year.
On Reddit, the recurring performance complaint is uneven CPU speed. Several users say Contabo oversells, meaning it sells more virtual cores than the hardware can serve at full speed at once. That’s why the Max Performance line exists. Here’s a useful comparison. On a 24-month term, Cloud VPS 18 and Cloud VDS S both cost EUR 39.20 a month. The first has 18 shared cores and 96 GB; the second has 6 reserved cores and 24 GB. The price is the same; you choose between more resources and guaranteed ones.
Customer Experience
Our 4.0 score comes from the 9,176 customer reviews we examined. On Trustpilot, Contabo holds a TrustScore of 4.6 from 11,244 reviews. That profile is polarized: 77% of reviews give 5 stars and 11% give 1 star. It’s also busy, with 4,107 reviews in the last 12 months. Trustpilot labels the profile as a paid subscription and notes that Contabo invites customers to review.

The 1-star bar is the second largest after 5 stars. The panel below it says Contabo asks customers to review. Trustpilot, captured 26 September 2026.
Who wrote the reviews matters more than the average. We read the 200 newest reviews, posted between 8 and 26 September 2026. Contabo had invited 179 of the reviewers, and their ratings averaged 4.80. Only 2 of those 179 gave a single star. The other 21 found Trustpilot on their own. Their ratings averaged 3.19, and 8 of the 21 gave a single star.

Average star rating by how the reviewer came to write, for the 200 newest reviews. Source: Trustpilot, reviews of 8 to 26 September 2026, counted 26 September 2026.
Neither group is fake. What differs is who picks the moment: Contabo decides when to send an invitation, while unprompted reviewers usually write because something went wrong. A new buyer’s odds sit somewhere between 3.19 and 4.80.
What Customers Praise
We read the 60 newest English five-star reviews. The largest group, 22 of them, thank support for a quick fix. Several praise staff for granting extra days to pay an overdue bill.
Price is the next theme, in 15 reviews. Customers compare what they’d pay elsewhere for the same RAM and storage. A further 14 mention stability, often from people running bots, dashboards or small production apps for a year or more.
Common Complaints
The 80 newest one-star reviews run from 21 May to 25 September 2026. We counted keywords in their opening lines. At least 36 mention support, 29 mention money or billing, 19 describe losing access to a server and 14 complain about speed.
The most serious group is smaller. At least 10 describe deleted servers or lost data. Some follow a missed payment. Contabo’s help centre is blunt about that case. An account deactivated for a missed payment can’t be reactivated; you must order again as a new customer.
Access problems form the other cluster. Reviewers describe logins failing after password resets, or during an upgrade or migration. That covers both SSH (the standard remote login for Linux) and VNC (the emergency console in the control panel). Some waited days for a human answer.
Community Feedback on Reddit
Reddit is harsher than Trustpilot, and more specific. The biggest thread of the past month came on 21 September 2026 in r/VPS. A developer said Contabo deleted a live server and gave its IP address to another customer, whose website then appeared on the developer’s domain.
The replies are telling. The top-voted ones doubted the deletion was random and suggested checking invoices and emails. Another put the lesson bluntly: “You were using Contabo to back up your Contabo data?”
The performance verdict is fairly consistent. An r/VPS thread from 24 August 2026 compared netcup and Contabo. The top answer picked netcup because “Contabo is overselling their Servers a lot.” Other users say CPU speed “fluctuates a lot” but call it fine for light jobs such as a Telegram bot.
There are defenders too. One user in Australia reported four years without problems. Another set up monitoring to catch hidden CPU contention and saw no issue in two weeks.
Support Quality
Support runs on tickets, in English and German only. Contabo’s homepage promises “Round-the-Clock Phone Support: Available 24/7”. Its own help article titled “How Do I Call Contabo Customer Support?”, updated 25 January 2026, gives no number. It sends you to the documentation, then to a ticket.

The article about calling support offers a ticket link, not a phone number. Contabo’s help centre, captured 26 September 2026.
Getting to a ticket takes a login. The “Contact Support” link leads to the sign-in page of Contabo’s new control panel, which warns that its credentials “might differ” from the old one. Contabo’s support page claims a 2-hour average response time. The same page still says the company has 17 years in business, while the homepage says 23.
When to Use Contabo
Contabo makes sense when the server is cheap to lose and you know how to rebuild it.
Good Fits
Self-hosters and developers: if you run Linux comfortably, the Core VPS has room for Docker, n8n, Nextcloud or a game server. That costs USD 5.28 to USD 13.44 a month. netcup and InterServer charge more than twice as much for 8 GB.
Always-on side projects: bots, scrapers, dashboards and staging copies rarely need steady CPU. Reddit users running this kind of job report few problems.
A second copy of your data: Storage VPS 10 gives 300 GB of SSD for USD 5.28 a month on 24 months. That’s a cheap spot for backups of servers hosted elsewhere.
You’ll Like It If
- You need lots of RAM on a small budget, since Contabo gives 8 GB at the entry price.
- You live in Europe and can pay in euros, since EU-region servers carry no location fee.
- You want dedicated cores for less, since Max Performance VPS starts at USD 47.20.
- You automate everything, since the API, CLI and cloud-init come with every VPS.
When NOT to Use Contabo
Contabo is a poor fit when downtime or data loss would cost you real money.
Look Elsewhere If
You rely on the host’s backups: Contabo’s status page says automated backups have been paused since 8 September 2026. The notice follows a performance problem in its Object Storage cluster. The first notice estimated 900 minutes; on 23 September the backups were still paused.

The 23 September update says automated backups remain paused. The notice opened on 8 September with an estimated duration of 900 minutes. Contabo status page, captured 26 September 2026.
Hands-on help matters: the managed option costs USD 144.99 a month, 27 times the entry plan’s 24-month rate. Without it, support won’t debug your software.
Business buyers who might want a refund: Contabo’s 14-day revocation applies to private accounts only. Business accounts aren’t eligible, and even private customers must accept losing all data on the server.
Two years up front is too much: the price gap is small, but month-to-month billing still costs 25% more than the 24-month rate.
Deal-Breakers to Check
- You want to reach a person by phone: Contabo’s calling guide lists no number, only tickets.
- Your users are in Asia: Singapore was out of stock for the entry plan, and Asian regions add up to USD 3.15 a month.
- You sometimes pay late: a deactivated account can’t be restored, only replaced.
- You need steady CPU on a Core plan: reports of fluctuating performance are common. Budget for Max Performance instead.
If these gaps matter, netcup and InterServer below fix different ones: steadier servers, and month-to-month billing with included management.

Contabo Plans and Pricing
Contabo’s prices below are its own US dollar figures from its catalogue, before tax, checked on 26 September 2026. Contabo also shows prices with VAT added at the rate for the visitor’s country, so the number on your screen may differ.
Prepay warning: the advertised Cloud VPS 4 price of USD 5.28 a month needs a 24-month term. Contabo’s terms say customers living outside Germany pay for the whole term at once. That’s USD 126.72 before tax on day one. Pay month to month and the same server costs USD 6.60, 25% more.
In the configurator we saw exactly that: a 24-month order showed EUR 105.60 plus VAT “Due Today”. A 12-month term costs USD 5.61 a month. No term has a setup fee.

Look at “Due Today”: a 24-month order is billed in full, EUR 105.60 plus VAT. The prices shown include 23% VAT for the visitor’s location. Contabo’s Cloud VPS 4 configurator, captured 26 September 2026.
Core VPS
| Plan | vCPU / RAM / SSD | 24-month term | Month to month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 | 4 / 8 GB / 100 GB | USD 5.28 | USD 6.60 |
| Cloud VPS 6 | 6 / 12 GB / 200 GB | USD 7.20 | USD 9.00 |
| Cloud VPS 8 | 8 / 24 GB / 300 GB | USD 13.44 | USD 16.80 |
| Cloud VPS 12 | 12 / 48 GB / 400 GB | USD 24.00 | USD 30.00 |
| Cloud VPS 16 | 16 / 64 GB / 500 GB | USD 35.60 | USD 44.50 |
| Cloud VPS 18 | 18 / 96 GB / 600 GB | USD 47.04 | USD 58.80 |
So how much did the June change cost? On 4 June 2026 the entry plan listed at EUR 4.50 a month, or EUR 3.60 on a 12-month term. By 19 June it listed at EUR 5.50, or EUR 4.40 on 12 months. By 2 August, that EUR 4.40 rate needed a 24-month term. Contabo’s blog blamed the AI boom for “a dramatic increase in RAM and HDD prices” in late 2025 and 2026.

Entry VPS prices in EUR before VAT, on three dates in 2026. Source: Contabo’s VPS pages, via Wayback Machine captures of 4 June, 19 June and 2 August 2026.
Performance VPS and Max Performance VPS
Performance VPS starts at USD 13.00 a month on 24 months, or USD 16.25 month to month. That buys 4 EPYC cores, 8 GB of RAM and 150 GB of NVMe. The top Plus 18 plan costs USD 95.20 or USD 119.00.
Max Performance VPS starts with the Cloud VDS S at USD 47.20 on 24 months, or USD 59.00 month to month. The largest, XXL, has 24 cores and 96 GB for USD 167.20 or USD 209.00. Its EPYC 7282 is a 2019-generation chip, older than the dedicated range.
Dedicated Servers
Dedicated prices use a 12-month term rather than 24. The Ryzen 12 Cores server costs USD 131.75 a month on 12 months, or USD 155.00 month to month. The Genoa 24-core server costs USD 215.10 or USD 239.00. The Turin 32-core costs USD 431.10 or USD 479.00, and the Turin 64-core USD 755.10 or USD 839.00.
Watch the crossed-out price on the homepage. It sets the Ryzen deal against EUR 149 before VAT, a former list price. The real month-to-month price is EUR 129, so the term discount is 15%, not the 26% the crossed-out figure suggests.
Hidden Costs to Watch
- Backups: Auto Backup costs USD 2.00 a month on the entry plan. It runs daily and keeps the last 10 versions.
- Management: a managed server costs USD 144.99 a month extra, 27 times the entry plan’s 24-month rate.
- Control panels: cPanel starts at USD 27.50 a month for 5 accounts. Plesk starts at USD 15.00.
- Windows Server: USD 9.60 a month on top of the plan.
- Extras: an extra IPv4 address costs USD 4.50 a month, private networking USD 2.99 and full monitoring USD 14.99.
- SSL: a paid certificate costs USD 89.99 once. A free Let’s Encrypt certificate works if you install it yourself.
- Currency: your account stays in the currency you choose at the first order. Contabo’s dollar prices are about 1.2 times its euro prices, and the European Central Bank rate on 25 September 2026 was 1.1403. Paying in euros saves about 5%.
Pricing Verdict
Contabo is still very cheap per gigabyte of RAM, even after June. There’s no teaser rate that triples at renewal. The trap is commitment: the best price needs 24 months paid up front. Contabo’s terms don’t define a 24-month term, so it has never said in writing what the rate becomes after month 24. If it reverts to the month-to-month price, that’s a 1.25x increase.

Contabo Transparency Score
Contabo’s site shows every plan’s specs and prices, but its marketing and its contract don’t always agree.
- Company Information: Good. The legal notice names Contabo GmbH in Munich, register number HRB 180722 and the managing directors. KKR announced its majority stake on 8 June 2022. One slip: the homepage metadata still carries an old Munich address.
- Pricing Transparency: Limited. Every plan’s monthly and term price is public. But the upfront payment rule sits only in the terms, and the dedicated deal uses a former price as its crossed-out figure.
- Technical Documentation: Good. CPU models, port speeds and locations are listed. The support page still describes the entry plan with 75 GB of NVMe.
- Terms and Policies: Limited. The terms promise 99.9% availability with no stated compensation. They also list initial terms of “one, three, six or twelve months”, while the shop sells 24.
That last point matters for anyone on the 24-month rate. The help centre adds that a subscription can’t be extended “beyond 18 months”. Neither document says what a 24-month customer pays in month 25.

Clause 5 names four contract lengths, outlined here, and 24 months isn’t one of them. Contabo’s General Terms and Conditions, effective December 2025, captured 26 September 2026.
Overall Transparency: Limited. The price catalogue is open, but the contract behind the headline price has gaps.
Alternatives to Contabo
Each option below fixes one gap described above: uneven CPU, the prepay term, or the cost of help.
For Flexible Billing: Hetzner
Hetzner lists an hourly price for every cloud plan, so there’s no term to prepay. It’s also a German company, with sites in Germany, Finland, the US and Singapore. Read our Hetzner review for its verification rules and 2026 price rises.
For Steadier Performance: netcup
netcup’s VPS 1000 G12.5 has 4 vCores, 8 GB and 128 GB of SSD. It costs EUR 14.99 a month (about USD 17.09) on a 12-month contract. That’s close to three times Contabo’s month-to-month price, but Reddit users keep picking it for consistency. Our netcup review covers its contract terms.
For Month-to-Month Billing With Help: InterServer
InterServer bills month to month, so nothing is paid up front. Four slices (2 cores, 8 GB, 160 GB of SSD) cost USD 12 a month. Managed support comes included from 8 slices, at USD 24. See our InterServer review for details.
Weighing Core VPS against Max Performance? Our guide to cloud VDS versus dedicated VPS explains what reserved cores actually change.
Contabo scores 4.0 out of 5 across the 9,176 reviews we examined. It’s the right host for technical users who want maximum RAM per dollar and treat backups as their own job.
The Bottom Line
The hardware-per-dollar case survived June’s 22% price rise. The support case didn’t improve: unprompted reviewers average 3.19 stars, and Reddit threads keep circling deleted servers and slow tickets. With automated backups paused since 8 September, a Contabo server should never hold your only copy of anything.
Buy Contabo for side projects, self-hosted tools and a cheap second copy of data. Pick netcup if you need steadier CPU. Pick InterServer if you want month-to-month billing and included management.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Contabo a good first VPS?
Only if you’re ready to learn Linux on your own. Support answers tickets but won’t set up your software. Beginners should add Auto Backup for USD 2.00 a month and keep another copy elsewhere.
Did Contabo raise its prices in 2026?
Yes. The entry VPS went from EUR 4.50 to EUR 5.50 a month in June 2026. Its best rate now needs a 24-month term instead of 12. In US dollars, it costs USD 5.28 on 24 months and USD 6.60 month to month.
Why is Contabo’s Trustpilot score higher than its complaints suggest?
Most recent reviews are invited. In the 200 newest, 179 invited reviewers averaged 4.80 stars. The 21 who came on their own averaged 3.19.
Should I choose Contabo or Hetzner?
Choose Contabo for more RAM and disk per dollar. Choose Hetzner for hourly billing and no long term. Hetzner also suits you if you want to delete servers often.
Does Contabo back up my server?
Not by default. Auto Backup is a paid add-on that keeps 10 daily versions. Since 8 September 2026 Contabo’s status page has said automated backups are paused. Cancelling a VPS also deletes its snapshots and backups for good.
Can I get a refund from Contabo?
Private customers can cancel within 14 days, but they lose all data on the server. Business accounts can’t. An automatic renewal can be refunded within 72 hours, except for customers in Germany.
