Ezoic ha trascorso anni come rete pubblicitaria che avrebbe preso quasi chiunque. Su 18 febbraio 2026 ha fissato un piano di 250,000 utenti mensili per i nuovi editori. Quattro mesi prima, Raptive si era spostato dall'altra parte, cutting its entry requirement from 100,000 monthly pageviews to 25,000. Those two numbers shape a new travel blog more than any theme you pick. They decide whether the site starts paying for itself before you lose interest in it.
Risposta rapida: Build on self-hosted WordPress with a general-purpose theme. Choose hosting on storage per dollar rather than the headline rate. Photos are the thing a travel blog stores, and several popular entry plans stop at 10 GB. Budget about USD 36 a year for hosting if you prepay four years upfront, e USD 132 a year once that rate expires.

Ultima revisione: settembre 2026. Prices and thresholds verified.
Where These Numbers Come From
Ogni prezzo, storage cap and traffic threshold below was checked against the company’s own page during the week of 8 settembre 2026. Nothing here is carried over from an older draft of this guide.
Ad network thresholds came from the networks themselves rather than from blog posts about them. This is the area where stale numbers circulate hardest. Several guides still describe Ezoic as having no traffic minimum, and that stopped being true in February. Theme popularity figures come from the WordPress.org API, which publishes install counts and rating totals as verified data rather than marketing claims.
Three exclusions shaped the recommendations. We skipped any hosting plan whose renewal price is not published. A travel blog is a multi-year project, and an unpublished renewal is a blank cheque. We skipped platforms with per-file upload caps under 10 MB, which rules out one tier you will otherwise see recommended. And we skipped free themes under 1,000 installazioni attive, which eliminated every travel-branded theme in the directory.
Some things stayed out of reach. We ran no load tests, measured nothing on live travel blogs, and never timed a support queue. Where a figure could only be confirmed through a secondary source, the text says so rather than presenting it as verified. Booking.com’s exact commission percentages are the main case, since its partner help pages blocked every attempt to read them.
What Changed for Travel Blogs in 2026
The honest starting point is that search sends fewer people to travel content than it used to. The drop is measured rather than rumoured.
Pew Research tracked the browsing of 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits. Senza uno, they clicked in 15% of visits, nearly twice as often. Solo 1% of visits produced a click on a link inside the AI summary itself. People also gave up more readily: 26% ended their browsing session on a page with an AI summary, contro 16% senza.
Travel sits at the sharp end of this. Similarweb’s 2026 generative AI research found that travel and hospitality prompts carry a citation about 23% del tempo. That is the highest rate of any category it tracks, and it cuts both ways. Your destination guide competes with a summary that answers the question outright, and travel is the category where those summaries most often name a source.
Here is the part that gets left out. Google’s own guidance on helpful content still asks for “expertise that comes from having actually used a product or service, or visiting a place.” A travel blogger holds the one asset a summary cannot manufacture. You went there, and the photographs are yours. The generic “10 best things to do in Lisbon” post is the format under pressure, not the first-hand account.
Attrition is real, anche se. Joao Leitao, who has run a travel blog directory since 2003, re-checked all 2,111 blogs his list has ever carried. He published the count in August 2026, and found 848 of them gone: domains dead, parcheggiato, venduto, or simply abandoned mid-sentence. Questo lascia 1,263 alive. It is one curator’s dataset rather than an industry study. But it is a real count of real domains, and roughly two in five did not survive.
Where to Build It
Start with the constraint that actually separates these platforms for travel writing: what happens when you upload a lot of large photographs.
Ghost is the clearest illustration. Ghost Pro’s Starter tier costs USD 18 per month and caps uploads at 5 MB per file. A single photo straight out of a mirrorless camera will exceed that. To upload normal camera files without compressing each one by hand, you need Publisher at USD 29 al mese fatturato annualmente. That raises the cap to 100 MB, and costs USD 348 a year for a blog that has not earned anything yet.
Wix Light costs USD 17 per month annually and includes 2 GB di memoria. Wix Core costs USD 29 e include 50 GB. The extra USD 12 un mese compra 25 times the storage, which makes Light a false economy for anyone posting galleries. WordPress.com follows the same shape. Personal at USD 4 per month gives you 6 GB. Premio in USD 8 ti dà 13 GB, and Business at USD 25 ti dà 50 GB. Personal is cheap and small in equal measure.
Squarespace is the outlier, with unlimited storage on every plan and a 300 MB per-file ceiling. For a photography-led travel blog that is a real advantage. What it now costs, and how that cost arrived, is another matter. A luglio 2026 Squarespace raised its annual Core plan by 26%, taking it from USD 23 a month to USD 29, with no published announcement. Plus went from USD 39 a USD 49. Advanced stayed at USD 99. Customers found out from their invoices.
Then there is the platform risk nobody prices in. Square is unpublishing Weebly sites in 67 countries on 27 settembre 2026, with account access ending on 26 dicembre 2026. The platform is withdrawn entirely on 2 gennaio 2027, and affected users lost the ability to publish new pages back on 29 giugno. The United States and most of Western Europe are not on the list, so this is not a global shutdown. But if you are building from one of those 67 paesi, the decision is already made for you. I nostri guide to migrating from Wix to WordPress covers the export mechanics that apply here too.
Substack and Medium are not really candidates, for the same underlying reason. Substack takes 10% of paid subscription revenue, and Stripe adds roughly 2.9% più USD 0.30 per transazione. On a USD 10 monthly subscription that comes to almost 16%. On a USD 100 annual one it drops to about 13%, because the fixed USD 0.30 spreads further. Medium charges USD 5 per month for a custom domain. Neither gives you a media library, a gallery structure, or a site you control. They are publications, not travel blogs.
Self-hosted WordPress wins here for an unglamorous reason. Your storage ceiling, your image handling and your monetisation are all things you can change later, without rebuilding. Want to confirm you enjoy the writing before paying anyone? Puoi start a WordPress blog without a domain and move it across once you are sure.
The Photo Problem Nobody Budgets For
A travel blog is a photo storage business with writing attached. This section is the one most guides skip entirely.
WordPress does not store one copy of your photograph. On upload it generates a thumbnail at 150 di 150, a medium capped at 300px, a medium_large at 768px wide, and a large at 1024px. When the original is big enough, it adds further copies at 1536px and 2048px. Your original stays too. One documented example measured a 1.3 MB upload expanding to 2.677 MB once its generated sizes were counted, a multiplier of roughly 2.06x. That example was a small image that never triggered the larger sizes, so a full-size travel photo generates more copies, not fewer.
Run that against the storage caps. SiteGround’s StartUp plan gives you 10 GB. Assume 250 KB per web-ready photo, and roughly double that once WordPress has made its copies. Call it 500 KB of disk per published image. UN 10 GB plan therefore holds somewhere near 20,000 di loro. Plenty, until you remember it also holds your database, your plugins and your backups. A single trip can produce 200 keepers.
Now the thing most people assume wrongly. WordPress core does not convert your uploads to WebP or AVIF. UN “WebP by default” change was merged for WordPress 6.1 and then pulled before release in 2022, and it never shipped. Core has accepted WebP uploads since 5.8 and AVIF uploads since 6.5. But if you upload a JPEG, WordPress makes JPEG copies. Getting modern formats out of a JPEG upload takes a plugin or a filter. Nothing happens on its own.
That makes image compression a real line item rather than an optional nicety. Imagify’s free tier covers 20 MB a month, all'incirca 200 immagini. Its Growth plan runs USD 5.99 al mese, o USD 4.99 fatturato annualmente, per 500 MB. ShortPixel’s free tier is 100 image credits a month. EWWW starts at USD 8 al mese, o USD 80 un anno. Cloudflare Images handles 5,000 transformations a month free, then charges USD 0.50 per thousand. Jetpack’s Site Accelerator is still free for self-hosted sites, which makes it the sensible thing to switch on before paying for anything.
Why does any of this matter beyond your disk quota? Google publishes three thresholds. Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 secondi, Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or below, Interaction to Next Paint no higher than 200 SM. Google scores each at the 75th percentile, so your slowest quarter of visits decides it. Run the arithmetic on a single unoptimised 2 MB hero image. Su un 5 Mbps hotel connection it needs over three seconds just to arrive, before the browser has painted anything at all. That is exactly the connection your readers are on.
One travel-specific habit is worth building early. Your camera or phone may write GPS coordinates into every frame you shoot. WordPress reads only a fixed set of EXIF fields into its database, covering camera, aperture, ISO, timestamp, copyright and artist. GPS is not among them, so your media library never displays the coordinates. That is not the same as removing them from the file, and the original you uploaded stays on the server exactly as it arrived. Where you slept last night is not always something you want shipped with the photo. Strip location data before upload, or run a plugin that does it on the way in.
Hosting That Fits a Photo-Heavy Blog
Judge these plans on storage per dollar, and measure it at renewal rather than at the headline rate. Mese 13 is when that number starts mattering.
Verpex Bronze is the standout on that measure. Porta 30 GB di spazio di archiviazione NVMe e si rinnova a USD 6.00 al mese. SiteGround StartUp carries 10 GB and renews at USD 17.99. That is three times the storage for a third of the price, or roughly nine times more storage per dollar. Un avvertimento: Verpex’s entry price could not be pinned down this session. The live page showed USD 6.00 while several sources quote USD 3.00 con cadenza annuale, quindi confermalo al momento del pagamento. The renewal figure is the consistent one.
Hostinger’s Premium plan is the volume choice, and one of the three hosts WordPress.org still recommends alongside Bluehost and Pressable. Costa USD 2.99 per month on a 48-month commitment, and that is not a monthly bill. È Dollaro statunitense 143.52 in anticipo per quattro anni. After that it renews at USD 10.99, un salto di 3,68x. Ottieni 20 GB di memoria, tre siti, e a 400,000 condensatore inode. That inode ceiling counts files rather than gigabytes, and a photo library generating six derivatives per upload consumes them faster than you would guess.
Bluehost Starter has the gentlest renewal curve here. It runs USD 3.99 con durata di 36 mesi, salendo a USD 9.99, a multiplier of 2.5x against SiteGround’s 6.0x and ChemiCloud’s 6.13x. Ti dà 10 GB of NVMe and ten sites. It also carries a documented 40,000 visitors per month soft cap, which is roughly when a travel blog starts to earn. That cap is also the signal to stop thinking about shared hosting. Somewhere past it, a small VPS or a managed WordPress plan stops being an indulgence and starts being cheaper than the downtime.
ChemiCloud deserves a mention for a non-price reason. Its money-back guarantee runs 45 days against the 30 days every other host here offers. DreamHost cut its own guarantee from 97 giorni a 30 nel mese di luglio 2025, so the long-refund era is largely over. For the wider field rather than this photo-focused shortlist, la nostra guida a piani di hosting condiviso economici compares renewal pricing across the market.
Setting It Up Without the Generic Steps
The install itself is a solved problem. Every host above runs a one-click WordPress installer. Buying hosting, pointing a domain and logging in works the same for a travel blog as for any other site. What follows is only the part that differs.
Skip the travel-branded theme
This is worth stating plainly, because the advice everywhere else says the opposite. We queried the WordPress.org theme directory directly. The most-installed free theme with “travel” in its name is Travel Blog Journeys, a 200 installazioni attive and zero ratings. The rest run between 20 e 100 installa, almost all with no reviews at all. Photography-branded themes are barely better, superando il limite 500 installa.
Compare that to the general-purpose themes. Astra has 1,000,000 active installs and 6,524 giudizi. Twenty Twenty-Five, which ships with WordPress, also has 1,000,000. Kadence and GeneratePress have 500,000 ogni, Blocksy 300,000. A theme with 200 installs has no track record of being maintained (and no angry reviewers to warn you when it stops). A travel blog is a long commitment to one design.
Pick a proven general theme and add a gallery. Astra Pro runs USD 69 a year and GeneratePress Premium USD 59 with a flat renewal. Blocksy Personal is USD 69, and Divi USD 89 per siti illimitati. The free tiers of Astra, Cadenza, GeneratePress and Blocksy are all genuinely usable, so paying is optional rather than a starting cost.
You do not need a travel plugin
The dedicated travel plugin category is far thinner than its marketing suggests. The largest, WP Travel Engine, ha 20,000 installazioni attive, and it is built for tour operators selling bookings rather than for bloggers. WP Travel has 4,000. Tripzzy has 100. That is the whole category, more or less.
Gallery plugins, al contrario, are a mature category. Meta Slider sits at 500,000 installs and NextGEN Gallery at 300,000. Modula, FooGallery, Envira Lite and Photo Gallery each hold 100,000. For maps, Interactive Geo Maps has 40,000 installs and MapPress 30,000. A gallery plugin plus a map plugin covers what a travel blog needs. Check the last-updated date before installing either, since abandoned plugins litter this space.
Farsi trovare: Scoprire, Not Just Search
Ora la buona notizia. For travel content in 2026, Google Discover matters as much as search results, and its requirements are ones you can actually meet.
Google’s documentation is specific about images. They need to be at least 1200 pixel di larghezza, più di 300,000 total pixels, and enabled with the max-image-preview:grande robots meta tag. Without that tag your photographs cannot appear large, which is the entire mechanism by which Discover surfaces travel content. There is no opt-in and no structured data requirement. Google also states plainly that it filters for clickbait, asking for titles that “capture the essence of the content” rather than withholding it.
That image requirement is a gift to travel bloggers. You already shoot landscape, your originals are already well over 1200px, and the meta tag is one line most SEO plugins set for you. Confirm yours does. Our overview of SEO tools for WordPress covers which plugins handle it.
One thing to stop doing: building FAQ sections for the rich results. Google removed FAQ rich results from Search starting 7 Maggio 2026. It pulled them from the Rich Results Test in June and ended Search Console API support in August. FAQ schema no longer earns you a visual result. Answer real questions because readers ask them, not because of the markup.
As for what still earns clicks, the data points one direction. Zero-click searches reached 68.01% of US Google searches between January and April 2026, dal 60.45% in 2024. The queries that survive are the ones a summary cannot satisfy. The specific itinerary with real costs. The trip report with your own photographs. The correction of something every other guide gets wrong. Broad destination overviews are the category being absorbed.
Making Money: The Real Thresholds
Qui è dove 2026 genuinely improved, and where most advice you will read is out of date.
Display advertising used to require serious traffic before anyone would talk to you. Mediavine’s old bar was 50,000 sessions a month. A revenue test replaced it: Dollaro statunitense 5,000 in trailing twelve-month ad revenue. More useful for a new blog, Mediavine’s Journey tier accepts sites at 1,000 sessioni in 30 days from Tier 1 paesi. A focused travel blog can hit that in months rather than years. Raptive dropped from 100,000 per 25,000 monthly pageviews in October 2025. Google AdSense has no numeric minimum at all, only content and policy requirements.
Ezoic went the opposite way, and this is the one to watch for. It now requires 250,000 monthly users from new publishers, efficace 18 febbraio 2026. Sites already running Ezoic before that date keep their access, but lose it if they remove the integration for more than seven days. Its Incubator programme takes 20 sites a month from below the threshold. Any guide calling Ezoic the network that accepts small sites is describing 2025.
On affiliate income, two corrections are worth more than a list of rates. Airbnb’s public affiliate programme closed in 2021, and what exists now is invite-only through Impact. The many guides still telling travel bloggers to join it are pointing at a door that is not there. Booking.com, Nel frattempo, does not pay a percentage of the booking. It pays a share of the commission it earns from the property, which is a materially smaller number than readers assume. Its exact published rates could not be verified directly this session, since its partner help pages refused every request. Treat any specific percentage you see with caution.
The rates we could confirm from the programmes themselves are narrower. Viator pays 8% on completed bookings with a 30-day cookie. GetYourGuide pays an 8% base commission once the activity takes place. Travelpayouts, which aggregates over 100 travel programmes, states that it does not take a cut of your commission.
Amazon deserves a warning. It cut Associates commission rates by as much as half for US publishers in March 2026. Some categories fell from 10% to between 4% e 5%. The change had rolled out across Asia-Pacific in late 2025. It was never formally announced, surfacing through publisher reports to Adweek and later confirmed by eMarketer on 19 Maggio 2026. Milestone bonuses were removed and SKU-level reporting withdrawn for most publishers at the same time. Packing-list posts built on Amazon links are worth materially less than they were eighteen months ago.
Whatever you join, disclose it properly. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides, revised in 2023, are explicit that a disclosure at the bottom of a post is not enough. Readers do not scroll that far. The guidance is that a disclosure should sit “very close to, o, anche meglio, parte di, the endorsement to which it relates.” A separate disclosure page does not cover you.
Which Setup Fits Your Travel Blog
Four situations cover most people starting out. Find yours and skip the other three.
Sto ancora decidendo. You are not sure you will stick with it, so do not buy hosting yet. Start free on WordPress.com or a local install, write six posts, and see whether you still want this in two months. Se fate, move to Hostinger Premium at USD 2.99 per month and accept the USD 10.99 rinnovo. Skip Ghost Starter entirely at this stage. Dollaro statunitense 18 a month with a 5 MB file cap is the worst combination for someone still deciding.
Shooting properly. You publish 40-photo galleries, so storage is your binding constraint. Go to Verpex Bronze at 30 GB and a USD 6.00 rinnovo, and add Imagify’s Growth plan at USD 4.99 fatturato annualmente. Skip SiteGround StartUp here despite the reputation, perché 10 GB a USD 17.99 renewal is the worst storage-per-dollar on this page. If you would rather not manage compression at all, Squarespace Core at USD 29 gives you unlimited storage. You are then paying USD 348 un anno, and accepting that prices can move 26% without an announcement.
Already at 25,000 pageviews. Apply to Raptive now, because you have cleared its threshold. Display revenue at that level typically beats anything affiliate links will do for a general travel audience. Do not apply to Ezoic. A 25,000 users you are a tenth of the way to its 250,000 minimo, and the Incubator takes 20 sites a month worldwide. Keep AdSense running meanwhile, since it has no floor.
In a Weebly country. If you are in one of the 67, your timeline is not negotiable. Sites go dark on 27 settembre 2026 and account access ends on 26 dicembre. Export your content now, before the account closes rather than after. Rebuild on self-hosted WordPress with any host on this page. Do not migrate to another proprietary builder, because you will have learned nothing from the experience.
Domande frequenti
What does a travel blog actually cost in year two?
Considerably more, and the gap is wider than most breakdowns admit. Hostinger’s USD 2.99 rate is not a monthly bill. You hand over USD 143.52 at once to cover 48 mesi, so hosting works out at USD 35.88 a year while that term runs. It then renews at USD 10.99 un mese, o USD 131.88 un anno. Add roughly USD 11 for the domain once the free first year ends. Stay on free image compression and year two lands near USD 143. The same shape on SiteGround, rinnovo a USD 17.99, lands near USD 227. Paid compression such as Imagify Growth adds about USD 60 a year on top of either.
How many pageviews do you need to make money from a travel blog?
Less than it used to be. Journey by Mediavine accepts sites at 1,000 sessions in 30 days from Tier 1 paesi. Raptive’s minimum is 25,000 monthly pageviews after its October 2025 taglio, and Google AdSense has no traffic minimum at all. Ezoic is the exception, now wanting 250,000 monthly users from new applicants. Ignore older guides listing it as the beginner option.
Is WordPress or Squarespace better for a travel blog?
Squarespace wins on storage, with unlimited space on every plan against the 10 GB a 30 GB caps on entry hosting. WordPress wins on cost and control. Hosting runs USD 35.88 a year on a four-year Hostinger prepayment against Squarespace’s USD 348, and you can change hosts when prices move. Squarespace raised Core from USD 23 a USD 29 nel mese di luglio 2026 with no announcement, which is the trade-off in a sentence. Choose Squarespace if you will never touch a plugin, WordPress if the blog is a multi-year project.
How many photos can I store on a 10 GB hosting plan?
All'incirca 20,000 web-ready images, but treat that as a ceiling rather than a target. WordPress generates up to six resized copies of every upload. One measured example showed a 1.3 MB file occupying 2.677 MB once its copies were counted. La tua banca dati, plugins and backups share the same 10 GB. If you shoot heavily, 20 GB o 30 GB plans cost very little more.
Do travel blogs still make money in 2026?
Some do, but the attrition is worth seeing clearly. A directory tracking travel blogs since 2003 re-checked all 2,111 it has ever listed, and found 848 gone as of August 2026. Pew Research measured clicks on traditional search results falling from 15% per 8% of visits when an AI summary appears. The blogs still earning tend to publish first-hand itineraries with original photography rather than general destination guides.
Do I need a travel-specific WordPress theme?
No, and the directory data argues against it. The most popular free theme with “travel” in its name has 200 active installs and no ratings. Astra has 1,000,000 installa e 6,524 giudizi. A theme nobody uses is a theme nobody is maintaining. Use a proven general-purpose theme and add a gallery plugin such as FooGallery or Modula, entrambi a 100,000 installa.
Start Here This Week
Build on self-hosted WordPress. Pick the plan with the most storage rather than the lowest headline price, and switch on image compression before you publish the first gallery. Verpex gives you the most room per dollar at renewal. Hostinger is the safer volume option, with a published 3.68x renewal. Bluehost has the gentlest price curve if you plan to stay put for three years.
Then write something an AI summary cannot assemble. You were there, the photographs are yours, and Google’s own guidance still asks for exactly that. The destination overview is the format under threat. The costed itinerary with your own images is not.
