Freenom – 446 Avis des clients: Analyse (Août 2026) - FR

Freenom is back, and it is no longer free. Freenom resumed selling .tk, .cf and .gq domains on 23 juillet 2026, en USD 9.95 une année. That reversed the exit from the domain business it announced in February 2024. Any review calling Freenom a free domain provider describes a service that ended on 31 juillet 2026.

This review covers what Freenom actually sells today, what the relaunch changed, et quoi 460+ customer reviews across two platforms say. Contrairement aux critiques d'affiliation, we include candid Reddit threads from buyers caught mid-relaunch. We also checked Freenom’s own terms document against the official registrar records. And we flag which review data is stale, because most of it is.

Évaluation globale: Freenom scores roughly 1.7/5 à travers 464 Commentaires (1.5/5 de 223 on one platform, 1.8/5 de 241 sur un autre). Its strength is a flat renewal price, since a domain renews at the same USD 9.95 you paid. The most common complaints involve unanswered support tickets and lost domains. Best suited for hobbyists renewing an existing .tk they can afford to lose.

Fonctionnalités et services

Here’s the thing most reviews get wrong. Freenom is not a web host. It never was one. It registers domain names, and that’s the whole product.

Services Offered

  • Domain registration in .tk, .cf and .gqthe three country-code extensions Freenom still operates
  • Domain renewal and transferpriced identically to registration
  • Basic DNS management (DNS is the system that points a domain at your server)
  • A reseller programme via its Bitsafe API, plafonné à 10 domains per transaction

There is no shared hosting and no VPS (un serveur privé virtuel, your own slice of a machine). No email hosting either, and no SSL certificates (the files that encrypt traffic and give a site its padlock). If you need somewhere to put a website, you’ll buy that elsewhere and point a Freenom domain at it. Notre comparaison d'hébergement mutualisé covers hosts that actually serve pages.

Which Extensions Still Work

Freenom once ran five extensions. It now runs three. Mali reclaimed .ml, and Gabon moved .ga to the French registry operator Afnic. Both changes are reflected in the IANA root database, the official record of who runs each extension.

This matters more than it sounds. Freenom’s own shopping cart still lists .ml and .ga at USD 9.95, alongside roughly 338 generic extensions like .com, .net and .org. That price list appears to be an unconfigured leftover in its store software. Freenom cannot sell you a .com, and the reason is in the next section.

The Registrar Problem

Selling .com, .org or any generic extension requires ICANN accreditation. ICANN is the body that oversees the domain name system. Freenom’s accredited entity, OpenTLD B.V., was terminated in November 2023 after failing to answer three separate compliance breach notices. Ses 16,521 generic domains were moved to another registrar under ICANN’s transition procedure.

IANA’s registrar registry still lists OpenTLD B.V., registrar ID 1666, with the statusTerminated”. Freenom’s current paid-domains terms document opens with the lineOpenTLD B.V. is an ICANN accredited registrar”. That statement has been untrue since 25 novembre 2023, and it sits on page one of the contract you agree to when buying.

L'effet pratique: .merci, .cf and .gq are country-code extensions, which don’t need ICANN accreditation. Freenom can sell those. But you also lose ICANN’s dispute and transfer protections, because those only apply to accredited registrars.

Attentes en matière de performances

No independent benchmark data exists for Freenom’s DNS, and we found no third-party uptime monitoring. What we can report is the state of Freenom’s own infrastructure on 3 août 2026. The TLS certificate for freenom.com expired on 28 juillet 2026 and was still unrenewed six days later. TLS is the current name for SSL, and an expired certificate makes browsers refuse the site. The certificate for the customer portal, my.freenom.com, expired the same morning we checked. Chrome refuses to load either address, returning ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID.

Certificates get renewed, and this one may be fixed by the time you read this. The signal isn’t the outage. It’s that a company selling domain names let its main certificate lapse for six days during its own relaunch week.

Expérience client

Freenom’s rating distribution is one of the most lopsided we’ve measured. De 223 reviews on the larger platform, 180 sont 1 étoile. C'est 80.7%. Seulement 20 sont 5 étoiles, à 9.0%. Le reste 23 sit in the middle. The resulting score is 1.5/5.

One detail makes this corpus unusual, and it cuts in Freenom’s favour on honesty. Nearly all of those reviews are organic, meaning customers wrote them unprompted. Seulement 4 de 196 we sampled came through an invitation link. Many hosts we review inflate their scores by soliciting reviews from happy customers. Freenom has not done that. le 1.5 is what people volunteered.

The Stale Data Problem

Now the caveat that most reviews of Freenom miss entirely. Cette 1.5/5 describes a product that no longer exists.

We pulled publication dates for 196 Commentaires. La répartition: 14 dans 2019, 39 dans 2020, 50 dans 2021, 37 dans 2022, 38 dans 2023. Then it collapses. Ten in 2024, exactly one in 2025, and exactly one in 2026. Donc 178 de 196 Commentaires, à peu près 91%, were written about the free service between 2019 et 2023.

Almost nobody has reviewed the paid Freenom. Traitez le 1.5 as a verdict on the old company.

Ce que les clients louent

The 5-star reviews are nearly all nostalgic. Users describe free .tk domains as a cheap way to deploy side projects, test apps or run a hobby site without spending anything. Un critique l'a résumé: reliable and free until abuse got out of hand.

The other recurring positive is the flat price. Buyers who did renew note that the renewal cost matched the registration cost, with no promotional trickery.

Plaintes courantes

Three themes dominate the negative reviews, and they’ve been consistent for years.

Domains disappearing without notice. Multiple reviews describe registrations expiring with no invoice, no reminder and no warning email. When users contacted support, they were told it was too late to recover the name.

Support that doesn’t answer. Tickets closed without a reply. Emails unanswered. This is the single most repeated complaint across the entire corpus.

Loss of control over paid domains. One reviewer with paid domains running to 2029 reported losing DNS service for them, leaving the domains unusable and untransferable.

Commentaires de la communauté (Reddit & Les forums)

Reddit’s r/Domains ran a 45-comment thread through July 2026 as the free tier was shut down. It is the only substantial account of the paid relaunch anywhere, and it’s worth reading before you buy.

The most serious reports involve payments. One user paid for a one-year renewal by credit card on a Wednesday. The expiry date didn’t change and the portal still showed an unpaid invoice. They opened a support ticket, emailed two separate Freenom addresses, then posted a physical tracked letter to the Haarlem office. The letter was signed for. Weeks later they had still received no response, while automated emails warned the domain would expire. A second user reported being charged for a renewal, getting no reply, and going to their bank for a chargeback.

Support answers also contradicted each other. Some users were told their expiry reset wasa glitch on their partand their domain was restored to 2033 sans frais. Others were told plainly that all free domains end on 31 juillet 2026. Both messages went out in the same week.

One of those support replies is the only public statement we found naming a new owner. It describes the business as transferred from OpenTLD B.V. to a new operator, IPTI B.V. We could not confirm that company independently, and Freenom has published nothing about it. Treat it as unconfirmed.

A separate thread from 12 juillet 2026 describes a user locked out for two and a half years. The cause: Freenom’s mail servers couldn’t deliver password reset emails to Yandex addresses. Their access returned only when the paid relaunch began, along with a request to pay a higher renewal.

Qualité de l'assistance

Support is one email address, [email protected], plus a ticket form. There’s no phone line and no live chat. The knowledge base holds about 50 articles across nine categories, all about domain management.

Freenom has never claimed its Trustpilot profile. The reply rate to negative reviews is 0%, à travers 223 reviews and several years. Whatever else that indicates, it means public complaints go unanswered by policy, not by accident.

When to Use Freenom

The honest list is short, and every item comes with a condition.

Idéal pour

Renewing a .tk you already own and care about: Say you’ve run a hobby site on a Freenom domain for years. Links to it are scattered across the web. Paying USD 9.95 to keep it alive beats migrating everything. This is the strongest case, and it’s really about switching costs.

Throwaway projects on a .tk, .cf or .gq: Test environments, short-lived demos, a domain for a class exercise. Something where losing the name would annoy you rather than hurt you.

Buyers who want a genuinely flat price: Registration equals renewal at 1.0x. Plenty of registrars sell a first year cheap and triple it later. Freenom doesn’t.

Vous l'apprécierez si

  • You want a specific short .tk name that’s unavailable elsewhere, because Freenom is the only source
  • You’re fine managing DNS yourself and need nothing bundled
  • Your domain isn’t attached to income, email or anything you’d miss

When NOT to Use Freenom

This list is longer, and it should be. Si l'un de ces éléments s'applique, buy elsewhere.

Regardez ailleurs si

The domain carries a business: There are no refunds and no ICANN dispute protection. Add an unclaimed review profile with an 80.7% 1-star rate, plus documented cases of paid renewals not processing. That combination is wrong for anything generating revenue.

You need email on the domain: Freenom sells no mailboxes and no forwarding. Voir notre guide d'hébergement de messagerie for providers that do.

You need hosting too: Freenom has never sold hosting. Buying here means running two vendors for what most registrars bundle.

Deliverability and reputation matter: The .tk, .cf and .gq extensions carried years of phishing abuse. Many spam filters and corporate firewalls still treat them harshly. A .tk address can be blocked before anyone reads it.

Drapeaux rouges pour votre situation

  • Vous souhaitez une option de remboursement: Il n'y en a pas. You may requestspecial consideration” dans 5 journées, and the terms explicitly promise no guarantee of a refund
  • L'assistance téléphonique est indispensable: Freenom offers email only
  • You need a .com or .org: Freenom’s store lists them but its accreditation to sell them was terminated in 2023
  • You want a paper trail: A 7-day breach notice can end in deletion with no refund

Freenom Transparency Score

We assess how upfront Freenom is with information a buyer needs:

  • Informations sur la société: Pauvre. Sur 3 août 2026 the Company, Contact, Termes et conditions, Resellers and IP Agencies pages all served the domain checker instead of their own content. The footer gives a Haarlem address; the Trustpilot profile lists Amsterdam. The apparent change of operator has never been announced
  • Transparence des prix: Bien. The price is visible before checkout and renewal matches registration. Marked down for the euro and pound prices being the same number, and for a store listing 343 extensions when three are sellable
  • Documentation technique: Limité. The knowledge base is functional but covers only domain basics. No uptime commitment, no service level agreement, no infrastructure detail
  • termes & Politiques: Pauvre. The one terms document we could find is a PDF whose first line makes a false claim about ICANN accreditation. Refund terms areall sales are finalwith a discretionary 5-day window that guarantees nothing

Transparence globale: Pauvre. The pricing is clear and the flat renewal is honest. Almost everything else a buyer would check, who runs the company, what the terms are, how to make contact, is either missing, contradictory or wrong.

Alternatives to Freenom

If Freenom doesn’t fit, ceux-ci répondent à ses lacunes spécifiques:

For At-Cost Pricing: Registraire Cloudflare

Cloudflare states it doesn’t mark up domains at all, charging only what registries and ICANN charge, with no inflated renewals. DNS gratuit, CDN and SSL are included. It’s the closest thing toas cheap as possiblewithout being free.

For Included Extras: Pain de porc

A .com runs USD 11.08 with free WHOIS privacy, gratuit Let's Encrypt SSL, Jusqu'à 20 email forwards and free DNS. About a dollar more than a Freenom .tk, for an extension nobody’s spam filter distrusts. Voir notre cheap domain registration guide pour en savoir plus.

For Free Projects: Free Hosting With a Subdomain

If the appeal was purely zero cost, no registrar replaced Freenom’s free tier. The realistic substitute is a hosting plan that includes a subdomain. Notre guide d'hébergement WordPress gratuit couvre ces options.

Freenom Review at HowToHosting.Guide

Copiez ce résultat

Freenom in 2026 is a domain registrar selling three extensions at USD 9.95 une année. The company behind it spent 2023 et 2024 being sued by Meta, terminated by ICANN, and publicly promising to leave this business.

L'essentiel

Avec à peu près 1.7/5 à travers 464 Commentaires, Freenom delivers an honestly flat renewal price and very little else. le 80.7% 1-star rate reflects the free era, so it overstates the case against the current product. What replaces it isn’t reassuring either. Buyers report paid renewals that never processed. The terms document makes a false accreditation claim. Support answers some customers and ignores others.

It’s a reasonable choice for renewing a .tk you’d rather not abandon. It’s the wrong choice for anything that earns money, envoie un e-mail, or would hurt to lose. En USD 9.95, a .com from a working registrar costs about a dollar more.

If you need hosting alongside your domain, voir notre comparaison d'hébergement mutualisé, since Freenom won’t sell you any.

Questions fréquemment posées

Is Freenom still free?

Non. The free tier ended on 31 juillet 2026. Freenom support told users that remaining free registrations had their expiry dates moved to that date. Domains in .tk, .cf and .gq now cost USD 9.95 une année.

Is Freenom good for beginners?

Pas vraiment. There’s no phone support and no live chat, just email. Reviews repeatedly describe unanswered tickets. Beginners benefit most from a registrar that answers questions, and this isn’t one.

Is Freenom worth the price?

Rarement. USD 9.95 buys a .tk with no privacy service, no SSL and no email. Porkbun sells a .com for USD 11.08 with all three included. The main reason to pay Freenom is keeping a domain you already use.

De quoi les clients se plaignent-ils le plus ??

Trois choses dominent. Domains expiring without warning or invoice. Support tickets closed or ignored. Losing control of domains that were paid for. De 223 Commentaires, 180 sont 1 étoile, though most describe the free service.

Does Freenom offer refunds?

Non. The terms say all sales are final and non-refundable. You can requestspecial consideration” dans 5 days of purchase. The same clause states Freenom does not promise or guarantee you’ll get a refund.

Can I register a .com with Freenom?

Not any more, despite what its store shows. Selling .com requires ICANN accreditation. Freenom’s accredited entity, OpenTLD B.V., was terminated in November 2023 and IANA still lists it that way. Only .tk, .cf and .gq are genuinely available.

Does Freenom offer web hosting?

Ce n'est pas le cas, and it never has. Freenom registers domains only. You’ll need a separate host to run a website, then point your domain at it.
