This review pulls live prices from Hostwinds’ own checkout, not its marketing pages, because the two disagree. We use the full rating distribution rather than the average score. Community threads from Reddit and LowEndTalk fill in the rest, alongside the binding text of the Terms of Service. Contrairement aux critiques d'affiliation, we show what the cart actually charges and quote the terms that override the feature list. One thing most reviews haven’t caught up with: Hostwinds was acquired in April 2026.
Évaluation globale: Hostwinds scores 4.4/5 à travers 1,521 avis clients regroupés, but its live Trustpilot score has fallen to 2.1 de 725 Commentaires. Strengths are self-owned infrastructure, flat pricing with no renewal shock, and a free dedicated IP on shared plans. The main complaints involve billing disputes, the 72-hour refund window, and support that thins out once a real problem starts. Best for technically confident buyers who want cheap North American or Dutch servers; a bad fit for beginners who need a safety net.

Fonctionnalités et services
Hostwinds has run since 2010, founded by CEO Peter Holden and based at 12101 Tukwila International Blvd in Seattle, Washington. For fifteen years it stayed independent, which was part of its appeal in developer circles. That changed on 29 avril 2026, when HostPapa announced it had acquired Hostwinds LLC. Every review dated before May 2026 therefore describes an independent company. Vents hôtes’ own About page still doesn’t mention HostPapa; the client portal footer does, and now reads “© 2010-2026 Vents hôtes, a HostPapa Inc. company.”
Types d'hébergement proposés
- Shared Hosting – three cPanel tiers, unlimited disk and bandwidth
- Business Hosting – the same tiers on LiteSpeed, a web server faster than standard Apache, with fewer accounts per machine
- Reseller and White Label Reseller – for agencies billing their own clients
- VPS Hosting – Linux and Windows, géré ou non géré. Un VPS, ou serveur privé virtuel, is your own isolated slice of a machine
- Cloud Servers – the same VPS tiers billed hourly
- Dedicated Servers and Colocation – bare metal, or your own hardware in Hostwinds’ racks
That’s an unusually wide ladder for a company this size, and the top of it is real. Hostwinds owns the hardware rather than reselling someone else’s cloud.
Principales caractéristiques mises en avant par les clients
- Free dedicated IP on shared hosting: most hosts charge for this or reserve it for VPS. It helps if you send email from your site and don’t want a neighbour’s spam hurting your deliverability.
- Choice of data center at checkout: you pick Dallas, Seattle, or Amsterdam during the order, not afterwards via a ticket.
- Migration de site Web gratuite: Vents hôtes’ engineers move your site, and reviews report this going smoothly.
Emplacements des centres de données
Three facilities: Seattle, Dallas, et Amsterdam, described on Hostwinds’ own page as “SAS Type II, audited, Étage 3+ Data centers.” That’s thin by 2026 standards but sensibly placed. Dallas covers the central and southern US, Seattle the Pacific Northwest and Asian routes, Amsterdam the whole of Europe. If your visitors are in South America, Afrique, Inde, ou en Australie, every request crosses an ocean. One correction: some aggregators list a Paris location. It doesn’t exist.
Attentes en matière de performances
UNE 99.9999% uptime guarantee appears on the homepage, the About page, and every VPS page. Six nines means 31 secondes de temps d'arrêt autorisé par an. No shared host achieves that.
Website Planet recorded 99.982% uptime over three months using UptimeRobot. That’s normal for budget hosting, et à propos 180 times more downtime than the guarantee allows: 95 minutes a year rather than 31 secondes. Their GTmetrix runs found loads between 0.9 et 2.9 secondes, averaging 1.82s, with international results from 0.697s to 4.364s. Fast near the data centers, inconsistent elsewhere.
Here’s what matters more than the number. We searched all 30,134 characters of Hostwinds’ Terms of Service for the word “uptime.” It appears zero times. There’s no SLA in the binding document, meaning no Service Level Agreement and no compensation defined when uptime is missed. UNE 2020 r/sysadmin thread shows the consequence: after a multi-day outage, Hostwinds emailed customers admitting it “dropped below our SLA guarantee,” while the poster reported “no indication of any sort of compensation.”
Expérience client
Aggregated across platforms, Hostwinds carries 4.4/5 de 1,521 Avis des clients, and HostAdvice lists 4.7 based on expert ratings and 1,168 Critiques d'utilisateurs. Those numbers describe a well-liked host.
Trustpilot disagrees, and it’s worth understanding why. À travers 725 reviews the lifetime distribution is 454 cinq étoiles (62.6%), 91 quatre étoiles (12.6%), 33 trois étoiles (4.6%), 18 deux étoiles (2.5%), et 129 une étoile (17.8%). Average those and you get 4.0. The live TrustScore is 2.1, because the algorithm weights recent reviews far more heavily. So we counted the recent ones. In the twelve months to July 2026, Hostwinds received 14 Commentaires. Eleven were one-star, averaging roughly 1.5 dans l'ensemble. Dans 2026 seul, ten of twelve are one-star.
There’s a mechanical reason. Until around November 2023, Hostwinds collected invited reviews in volume. octobre 2023 alone produced a run of short, positif, five-star entries about quick setup and fast chat replies. Then the invitations stopped, and the profile now shows no recent invited users. What’s left is organic, and people rarely write unprompted reviews about hosting that works. The good reviews are real. They’re just old.
Ce que les clients louent
Setup speed comes up constantly. “Took two minutes to set up.” “Piece of cake setting up the server.” For a host selling unmanaged VPS to people who know what they’re doing, instant provisioning is the feature that matters. Chat support draws warm reviews when the question is simple, and not only historically: “Best support team, amazing hosting” was posted in February 2025. Value for money is the other steady theme. The resources are generous for the money, and nobody feels ambushed at renewal.
Plaintes courantes
La facturation domine, and the specifics repeat: les frais se poursuivent après l'annulation, refunds refused, unexpected line items. Deux 2026 review titles: “Billing is a disaster – outdated and malicious” et “Charged for extra storage for a website stored elsewhere Not in Hostwinds!” One from January 2025 captures the pattern: “They Don’t Care – It’s AI Automated and Backed by their Terms of Use.”
Le mot “géré” is the second theme. A May 2026 review is titled “Avoid Hostwinds: ‘Fully Managed’ is a Lie. Years of Data Lost Due to Their Negligence.” An earlier one reads “I paid for ‘managed’ cloud server and got neither management nor service.” The shared hosting page promises “Full Management” sans frais supplémentaires. Buyers read that as a promise about their data. The terms don’t support it.
Third is support depth. Fast first replies, then generic advice that resolves nothing. Website Planet’s tester had an agent crash their site attempting a basic redirect. The problem isn’t rudeness. It’s competence past the obvious.
Commentaires de la communauté (Reddit & Les forums)
Abuse reports are what experienced users warn about. A LowEndTalk reviewer who rated Hostwinds 3.5/5 in October 2021 called it “rock solid” et “good for production,” then added the catch: “they just roll over at any abuse report and so if anyone doesn’t like your site/s, good luck.” Séparément, r/webhosting threads describe shared IPs blacklisted for spam, one customer unable to deliver email for two weeks. Aggressive fraud screening at signup also comes up, with new orders cancelled and reinstated only after photo ID.
On the HostPapa acquisition, LowEndTalk managed five mostly sarcastic comments, the sharpest being “Some things seemingly never change. The one and only HostPapa is at it again.” No detailed concerns yet. It’s early.
Qualité de l'assistance
Channels are good: 24/7 chat en direct, billetterie, email, and a real phone number at (888) 404-1279. Phone support alone puts Hostwinds ahead of budget rivals who route everything to chat. Trustpilot’s own data shows it replies to 57% des avis négatifs, faire la moyenne 4.25 journées. That’s an engaged company. But a bit over half isn’t all of them.
When to Use Hostwinds
So who should actually buy this? Three groups get real value here.
Idéal pour
Developers who want cheap unmanaged servers fast: USD 4.99/mo for a 1GB VPS with full root access, provisioned in minutes, in the city you choose. You don’t need hand-holding and you keep your own backups anyway. This is the customer Hostwinds serves best.
People who hate renewal surprises: if a host has ever tripled your bill in year two, the flat pricing here is a relief. Note the store price rather than the advertised one, and the figure you write down stays the figure you pay.
Anyone needing US and EU presence from one account: Dallas, Seattle, and Amsterdam are selectable at checkout, with load balancing between them. For a business with customers on both sides of the Atlantic, that’s one vendor instead of two.
Vous l'apprécierez si
- You want to scale from shared hosting to colocation without changing provider
- You need hourly billing for short-lived work, à partir de 0,006931 USD/heure
- You want Windows VPS with a managed option, which many budget hosts don’t offer
When NOT to Use Hostwinds
Aucun hôte ne convient à tout le monde. Hostwinds is the wrong choice if any of these apply.
Regardez ailleurs si
You want a meaningful money-back guarantee: this is the big one. Hostwinds once advertised 60 journées. Today the terms require the refund request “within seventy-two (72) hours of the payment transaction time,” and anything outside that window is “considered invalid and not eligible for a refund.” The refund is prorated, pas plein. No guarantee is advertised anywhere on the live site. Website Planet called Hostwinds unique among the top hosts for leaving customers without a refund option. Every review promising 30 ou 60 days predates the change.
You’re relying on the host to keep your backups: the shared hosting page lists “Sauvegardes nocturnes” and tells you to “rest easy knowing your information will remain safe at Hostwinds.” The Terms of Service say the opposite, in plain words: “Hostwinds does not take backups of any kind of customer data, customer’s are responsible for managing and backing up their own data.” That’s the document governing your account. Buy the USD 3.00/mo add-on, run your own, or accept that a bad day means starting over.
You need a contractual uptime commitment: the advertised six nines has nothing behind it. If downtime costs you money and you need credits you can claim, regarde ailleurs.
Your audience is outside North America and Europe: trois centres de données, aucun en Asie, Amérique du Sud, Afrique, ou Océanie. Measured international load times reached 4.364s.
Drapeaux rouges pour votre situation
- Your site might attract abuse reports: the community consensus on how those get handled is consistent and unflattering.
- You want current dedicated hardware: entry bare metal is a 2014 Xeon with an HDD.
- You need a free domain: there isn’t one, and .com runs USD 19.09/yr.

Hostwinds Plans and Pricing
Credit first. Hostwinds runs no promotional-rate trick. There are no strikethrough prices, non “first term only” astérisques, and the words “se renouvelle à” appear nowhere on its site. Domain prices are identical for registration, transfert, et le renouveau. In a market where 3x renewal jumps are standard, that’s better behaviour.

The problem is different, and stranger.
⚠️ Price Warning: Vents hôtes’ product pages and Hostwinds’ actual store quote different prices. The shared hosting page advertises Basic at 6,99 USD/mois. The store at clients.hostwinds.com quotes the same plan “a partir de” 8,99 USD/mois. The gap is exactly USD 2.00/mo on all three shared tiers and all three business tiers. Then a USD 3.00/mo backup add-on arrives pre-ticked. Budget USD 11.99/mo for the plan advertised at USD 6.99.
Shared and Business Hosting
partagé (De base / Avancée / Ultime): advertised at USD 6.99, 8.99 and 10.99/mo. The store quotes USD 8.99, 10.99 and 12.99/mo.
Affaires (De base / Avancée / Ultime): advertised at USD 11.99, 13.99 and 16.99/mo. The store quotes USD 13.99, 15.99 and 18.99/mo.
All shared tiers include unlimited disk, largeur de bande, comptes de messagerie et bases de données, plus cPanel, SSL gratuit, Softaculous, the Weebly builder, et une IP dédiée gratuite. The only difference between them is site count: 1, 4, or unlimited. Terms run from 1 à 36 mois. Business adds LiteSpeed, higher PHP memory and inode limits, and a raised email cap. Hostwinds publishes none of those numbers, which makes the upgrade hard to price.
VPS, Cloud et dédié
VPS Linux non géré: 4,99 USD/mois (1 CPU, 1Go de RAM, 30GB SSD, 1Transfert TB) jusqu'à 328,99 USD/mois (16 CPU, 96Go de RAM, 750GB). Managed Linux: USD 7.14/mo for the same entry tier, up to USD 342.54/mo, a premium of about 43%. Managed covers OS updates, analyses antivirus, dépannage de charge, boot failures, and package installs. cPanel/WHM licences cost extra.
Serveurs Cloud: à partir de 0,006931 USD/heure, the monthly rate divided into hours. Un avertissement: hourly-billed products are excluded from refunds entirely.
Dévoué: from USD 122.00/mo for an Intel Xeon E3-1270 v3, 4 noyaux et 8 threads at 3.5GHz. RAM starts at 8GB (+USD 8.00), the default drive is a 1TB Enterprise HDD, bandwidth is 10TB. Look closely at that CPU. The E3-1270 v3 is a Haswell part Intel launched in 2014. At USD 122/mo with a spinning disk as standard, this is old hardware at a modern price.
Coûts cachés à surveiller
- Cloud Backups: USD 3.00/mo plus USD 0.03 par Go. Pre-selected at checkout, and listed as an included “Sauvegardes nocturnes” feature on the shared hosting page.
- Hostwinds Monitoring: 2,00 USD/mois. Also listed as a shared hosting feature. Not pre-selected.
- Domaines: no free year. .com costs USD 19.09/yr, .net USD 21.54, .org USD 20.39, .informations USD 37.89, .co USD 57.75. Nouveau, transfer and renewal prices match exactly, which is honest, mais en USD 19.09 for a .com is well above discount registrars.
- Migration and SSL: les deux gratuits.
Verdict sur les prix
On paper Hostwinds behaves well, because the price you pay in month 25 is the price you paid in month one. That’s rarer than it should be, and it’s the best thing about buying here.
So why the warning? Because you can’t trust the number on the product page. Lis “6,99 USD/mois,” click through, and check out without unticking the backup box, and you pay USD 11.99/mo. C'est 1.7 times the advertised rate, reached without a single promotional price expiring. Most hosts hide the increase in year two. Hostwinds hides it between the ad and the cart.

Hostwinds Transparency Score
We assess how upfront Hostwinds is with information that affects your buying decision:
- Informations sur la société: Limité. Année de fondation, fondateur, and street address are published clearly. But three months on, the HostPapa acquisition appears nowhere on the About page, while the client portal footer already carries the new ownership line.
- Transparence des prix: Pauvre. Product pages quote prices USD 2.00/mo below what the store charges on every shared and business tier. Then the checkout configuration screen shows no plan price at all, for any billing term. The only prices visible there belong to the two add-ons, one of them pre-ticked. Credit where due: no hidden renewal increases, and domain renewals match registration exactly.
- Documentation technique: Bien. VPS and cloud tiers are listed with full specs and per-tier pricing, and data center locations and certifications are published. Business hosting is the gap, sold on “higher PHP Memory Limits” et “higher inode limits” with no numbers attached.
- termes & Politiques: Pauvre. The terms are complete and readable, which is exactly how we found they contradict the marketing twice over. Backups are promised on the product page and disclaimed in the terms. UNE 99.9999% guarantee is advertised in three places while “disponibilité” appears nowhere in the terms. The 72-hour refund window is disclosed only in the terms.
Transparence globale: Pauvre. Everything is published, which is what makes this assessment possible. The documents just don’t agree. On backups, disponibilité, refunds, et prix, the version a buyer sees first is the flattering one. The binding version is the one they find later. A host that simply said “we don’t do backups, keep your own, here’s a USD 3 Ajouter sur” would score better selling the same product.
Alternatives to Hostwinds
If Hostwinds doesn’t fit, ces alternatives comblent ses lacunes spécifiques.
For a Real Refund Window: A Mainstream Shared Host
Seventy-two hours is an outlier. Thirty-day guarantees are standard in shared hosting, and several hosts go to 45 ou 90 journées. Comparez les options dans notre guide d'hébergement partagé.
For Modern Dedicated Hardware: A Bare-Metal Specialist
UNE 2014 Xeon with an HDD at USD 122/mo isn’t competitive. Providers running recent AMD EPYC and NVMe, which is solid-state storage several times faster than a SATA SSD, offer more machine for the money. Voir notre guide du serveur dédié.
For European Hosting: An EU-Based Provider
Amsterdam is Hostwinds’ only European site, et soutien, facturation, and company are all American. If your users and data live in Europe, a host based there usually means better latency and EU consumer protection. Notre Guide d'hébergement aux Pays-Bas covers providers in the same city.
For Managed VPS Without the Ambiguity: A Managed Specialist
Qu'est-ce que “géré” actually cover here? That ambiguity is the recurring complaint. Specialists define the boundary explicitly, and they back up your data as part of the service rather than as a USD 3.00/mo extra. Comparez-les dans notre Guide d'hébergement VPS.
Hostwinds is a competent budget host with a serious documentation problem. The servers work, the prices don’t climb, and the infrastructure is its own. What it publishes about backups, disponibilité, refunds, and price doesn’t survive contact with its own terms and its own checkout.
L'essentiel
It scores 4.4/5 à travers 1,521 avis regroupés, yet its live Trustpilot score is 2.1, and eleven of its last fourteen Trustpilot reviews are one-star. That’s a host whose reputation was earned earlier than its current customers experienced it. The infrastructure is real and the flat pricing is a real advantage. The 72-hour refund window and the terms that disclaim your data aren’t things you can work around, only things you can plan for.
Buy it if you’re technical, you keep your own backups, and you want cheap US or Dutch servers you can provision in minutes. Skip it if you’re new to hosting, if downtime costs you money, or if you might want out in week two. And whatever you buy, note the price in the cart, not the price in the ad.

Questions fréquemment posées
Is Hostwinds good for beginners?
Pas vraiment. The cPanel setup and one-click installers are beginner-friendly enough. The policies aren’t. Vous obtenez 72 hours to request a refund, and the terms state Hostwinds takes no backups of your data. Beginners need room to recover from mistakes. This host gives you very little.
Is Hostwinds worth the price?
It depends which price you mean. Shared hosting is advertised from USD 6.99/mo, but the store quotes USD 8.99/mo and a USD 3.00/mo backup add-on comes pre-ticked. That’s USD 11.99/mo unless you untick it: fair value, not a bargain. The unmanaged VPS at USD 4.99/mo is the better deal, and the price never rises at renewal.
De quoi les clients se plaignent-ils le plus ??
Facturation, par une large marge. Charges after cancellation, refused refunds, and unexpected line items dominate negative reviews. Second is the word “géré”: customers who bought managed plans report losing data and being pointed at the terms. Third is support depth. Réponses rapides, then generic advice that doesn’t fix the problem.
Does Hostwinds offer a money-back guarantee?
Non, not in any normal sense. Hostwinds used to advertise 60 journées. Today the terms require the request “within seventy-two (72) hours of the payment transaction time.” The refund is prorated, pas plein, and you must cancel in the client portal first. Domaines, Certificats SSL, Adresses IP, software licences and hourly-billed products are excluded entirely. Any review promising 30 ou 60 days is out of date.
Does Hostwinds really guarantee 99.9999% disponibilité?
That figure is advertised on the homepage, the About page, and every VPS page. Six nines allows 31 secondes d'arrêt par an. We searched the entire Terms of Service for the word “disponibilité” and found it zero times, so there’s no SLA behind the claim and no compensation defined if it’s missed. UptimeRobot testing measured 99.982% sur trois mois. Fine for the price. Not what’s advertised.
Who owns Hostwinds now?
HostPapa, which announced the acquisition of Hostwinds LLC on 29 avril 2026. Founder Peter Holden, who ran it independently from 2010, said HostPapa “has built a world-class platform with the resources and reach to help us do that at a much larger scale.” Vents hôtes’ About page still doesn’t mention the deal, though the client portal footer now reads “a HostPapa Inc. company.” Treat any review dated before May 2026 as describing a different company.
Is Hostwinds good for WordPress?
It’s adequate. Softaculous installs WordPress in one click on every shared plan, and Business Hosting adds LiteSpeed, which serves pages faster than Apache. What’s missing is the managed-WordPress toolkit: pas de mise en scène, no automatic core updates, backups only as a paid add-on. Website Planet measured LCP, or Largest Contentful Paint, at 665ms on an empty WordPress site and 1.5s on a built one. Fine numbers. Just don’t expect a WordPress specialist.
