InterServer will rent you a 12-core Ryzen 9900X with 64 GB de RAM por USD 149 por mês. Liquid Web lista USD 174 por mês para um servidor virtual dedicado com 6 núcleos e 32 GB. Ambos são fornecedores dos EUA, both checked the same day, and the physical machine is the cheaper one. They do differ on support, and that gets its own section below. What they don’t differ on is the direction the price runs. That direction is the opposite of what “VDS, the budget alternative to bare metal” would lead you to expect.
Resposta rápida: A VDS is a virtual machine with CPU cores reserved for you alone. A dedicated server is the physical box. No 2026 the VDS isn’t reliably cheaper. At Hetzner, USD 69.00 compra 6 núcleos físicos e 64 GB. Contabo’s 6-core VDS costs USD 53.82 e te dá 24 GB, o que funciona para 2.1x more per GB de RAM. Pick a VDS for snapshots, minute-scale rebuilds and nested virtualization on a budget. Pick bare metal for cores per dollar, large disks and control over the kernel and RAID.

How We Compared Dedicated Servers and VDS Plans
Price claims here come from provider pricing pages read on 16 setembro 2026, not from review summaries. Several of those pages load their prices through JavaScript. We read the rendered page in a browser instead of the raw HTML, which is why our Contabo figures don’t match guides quoting EUR 39.00 plano. Hetzner’s numbers come from the price feed its own product pages call.
Four filters decided what got in. Plans had to publish a core count and a RAM figure on a public page, so anything gated behind “entre em contato com vendas” foi cortado. That removed most enterprise bare metal. Plans also had to state whether cores are dedicated or shared, because that single line is the whole VDS argument. We recorded the term needed for the headline rate and the price without it, since a 24-month commitment is a real cost. Setup and installation fees got their own column, because on one range those fees equal a full month’s rent.
Currency conversions use the European Central Bank euro reference rate of 1.1537 USD for 16 setembro 2026. Dois limites que vale a pena declarar claramente: we did not run benchmarks, so nothing here measures how a specific workload behaves on either platform, and stock moves. Four of the cheapest Kimsufi models were marked “Em breve disponível” the day we checked, which is a polite way of saying out of stock.
VDS Means Two Different Things, and the Gap Between Them Is 3.2x
No standards body owns the term “virtual dedicated server”. So two providers use it for two products that barely resemble each other. Read both pages and you’ll land on a price expectation that fits neither.
Contabo’s version is a slice. Its Max Performance line gives you “dedicated CPU and RAM, allocated to your instance only”, running on a host you share with other tenants. The cores are pinned to you. The machine isn’t yours. Liquid Web’s version is the machine itself. Its own comparison page says a VDS “isolates an entire machine for one client whereas a VPS subdivides a physical server into smaller virtual machines”. Same three letters. One is a partition, the other is a whole server with a hypervisor bolted on top.
That gap shows up in the invoice. Six reserved cores cost USD 53.82 a month at Contabo, com 24 GB of RAM attached. Six reserved cores cost USD 174 at Liquid Web, com 32 GB. That is 3.2x the price for a third more memory. Liquid Web includes management options and US data centres, so this is not a like-for-like insult. It does mean “VDS pricing” is not a number you can reason about without naming the seller first.
The naming is moving too. Contabo announced on 29 Julho 2026 aquele “Max Performance is our renamed Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) linha”, and contabo.com/en/vds/ now redirects to its Max Performance VPS page. The plan names still read Cloud VDS S through XXL, the product line does not. If you are cross-checking against providers selling VDS plans in older guides, that rename is the first thing to reconcile.
One more catch in the same place. Contabo’s current page describes Cloud VDS S as 6 núcleos virtuais, not physical ones, on an AMD EPYC 7282. Guides written earlier in 2026 describe that tier as physical cores. The allocation is still yours alone either way. But if you are budgeting from a figure you read in March, check the spec line again before you order.
What You Actually Rent With a Dedicated Server
Start with what isn’t on the VDS side of the ledger: the hardware itself. Hetzner’s AX41 gives you a Ryzen 5 3600, 64 GB of DDR4 and two 512 Unidades GB NVMe, plus full root access and an IPv6 /64. Cancellation is “imediatamente”, in Hetzner’s own wording, sem prazo mínimo de contrato. Contabo bundles IPMI on its dedicated range, and InterServer includes IPMI console access on custom builds. That’s out-of-band access to a machine (the one thing no VDS can hand you, since there’s no machine to hand over).
Praticamente, the difference is what you are allowed to change. On bare metal you choose the kernel, the disk layout, the RAID level and the hypervisor. You can run Proxmox, hand PCI devices to guests, and set BIOS options. On a VDS you inherit the host’s decisions about all of it.
The old counterweight to this was time. Bare metal meant a ticket and a wait, sometimes days. So how long does it actually take now? OVHcloud quotes delivery in 120 segundos on the Kimsufi KS-5 in its Canada East region. InterServer keeps stocked “Compre agora” inventory for the same reason. Provisioning speed is still a VDS advantage, just not the multi-day chasm the older comparisons describe.
What the Same Money Buys: Real 2026 Preços
Here is every figure this article rests on, taken from the providers’ own pages on 16 setembro 2026.
Reserved-core virtual plans:
- Contabo Cloud VDS S: 6 núcleos virtuais (AMD EPYC 7282, 2.8 GHz), 24 GB de RAM, 180 GB NVMe, 250 Porta Mbit/s. EUR 46.65/month (USD 53.82) com prazo de 24 meses, IVA incluído. The same plan shows as EUR 39.20 on the product page, which is the identical price quoted before VAT.
- Contabo Cloud VDS XXL: 24 núcleos virtuais, 96 GB de RAM, 720 GB NVMe, 1 Gbit / s. EUR 165.65/month (USD 191.11).
- Liquid Web Cloud Dedicated: Intel Xeon E-2356G, 6 núcleos em 3.2 GHz, 32 GB de RAM, 2x 960 GB SSD em RAID 1, 10 Largura de banda de TB. USD 87/month for two months, então USD 174/month. One oddity to know before you order. The cards at the top of that page price the same 6-core, 32 GB build at USD 213, so the page disagrees with itself. We’ve used the comparison table, since it’s the one that lists the 32 GB e 64 GB variants separately. Configure the server before you trust either figure.
- Liquid Web Cloud Dedicated, nível superior: dual Xeon 6226R, 32 núcleos em 2.9 GHz, 128 GB de RAM, 3.2 TB SSD in RAID 10. USD 266 for two months, então USD 532.
Physical machines:
- OVHcloud Kimsufi KS-5: Intel Xeon E3-1270 v6, 4 núcleos / 8 threads at 3.8 GHz, 32 GB de RAM, 300 para 500 Mbps. USD 19.90/month plus a USD 19.90 taxa de instalação.
- Hetzner AX41: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 6 núcleos, 64 GB DDR4, 2x 512 GB NVMe, 1 Gbit/s with unlimited traffic. EUR 59.00/month (USD 69.00), taxa de configuração zero.
- InterServer custom Ryzen 9900X: 12 núcleos, 64 GB de RAM, choice of 4 SSD or 2 NVMe bays, 1 Gbps ilimitado, IPMI. From USD 149/month, sem taxa de configuração.
- Contabo AMD Genoa 24 Cores: EPYC 9224 às 2.50 GHz, 128 GB registered ECC, 2x 1 TB SSD. EUR 213.13/month (USD 245.89).
- InterServer custom dual Xeon Platinum 8173M: 56 núcleos, 128 GB de RAM. From USD 279/month.
Where the lines cross
Compare like for like on cores and the virtual option keeps losing. Hetzner’s AX41 and Contabo’s Cloud VDS S both give you six cores. The AX41 costs USD 15.18 more and includes 40 GB more RAM. That puts the VDS at USD 2.24 per GB of RAM against USD 1.08 on bare metal, so 2.1x more. Inside Contabo’s own catalogue the premium narrows as you climb. Its 24-core Genoa machine costs EUR 47.48 more than its 24-core VDS XXL, uma 1.29x prêmio. Para isso você consegue 32 GB more RAM and a Zen 4 chip instead of a Zen 2 1.
That CPU generation point deserves its own line, because core counts hide it. The EPYC 7282 under Contabo’s VDS range is a Rome part that AMD launched on 7 agosto 2019. The EPYC 9224 in its 24-core dedicated server is Genoa, from November 2022. Twenty-four cores on a seven-year-old die is not twenty-four cores on a current one, and no pricing page will tell you that.
The sharpest comparison sits inside Contabo’s own catalogue. EUR 46.65 per month buys either Cloud VDS S, com 6 núcleos dedicados e 24 GB, ou Cloud VPS 18, com 18 shared cores and 96 GB. Preço idêntico. Three times the cores and four times the RAM if you accept shared scheduling. That’s the exact cost of CPU isolation at one provider, with nothing else moving. Hold that number when a sales page tells you dedicated cores are the obvious upgrade. If shared scheduling suits your workload, ordinary Planos VPS are where the value is.
At the bottom of the market the inversion is total. The cheapest orderable Kimsufi was USD 19.90 em 16 setembro 2026, com 4 núcleos, 8 threads and 32 GB. Contabo’s cheapest VDS is USD 53.82, and it gives you 24 GB em um 250 Mbit/s port against the KS-5’s 300 para 500 Mbps. So you pay 2.7x more for less memory and a narrower pipe. What the premium actually buys is 180 GB of NVMe and the snapshot features. Not newer silicon, mind you. The KS-5’s Kaby Lake Xeon went on sale in March 2017, Contabo’s EPYC 7282 em agosto 2019. Both sides of this trade are running old cores. Honest trade, but it is a premium, not a saving. For the full range of physical options, veja nosso dedicated server provider comparison.
Where a VDS Genuinely Wins
Strip out the marketing and four advantages survive.
Snapshots and rollback. A hypervisor can freeze a disk image in seconds. On bare metal, your rollback plan is a restore from backup, and the restore takes as long as the data takes to copy. For anyone who patches production on a Friday, this is the feature that pays for the rest.
Rebuild speed. Reinstalling a VDS is an API call. Reinstalling a physical server means a rescue system, an image installer and more of your attention. Hetzner ships both tools with the AX41, which tells you how much attention is involved.
Nested virtualization on a small budget. This one surprises people. Contabo’s support documentation says you “can only setup nested virtualization with Contabo Dedicated Servers and Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS)”. Vocês “cannot set up nested virtualization” with its ordinary VPS range, because the required hardware features aren’t exposed there. So if you want Proxmox for USD 53.82, the VDS tier is the cheapest door in. One exception from the same page: pair a VDS with Windows Server and Hyper-V won’t work.
No exposure to one machine’s hardware. A failed stick of RAM in a physical server is your outage. In a virtual environment the host’s failure domain is the provider’s problem to schedule around, subject to whatever migration they actually offer. Neither arrangement backs up your data, so that job stays yours.
Where Bare Metal Wins
Cores per dollar, first and loudest. InterServer’s 56-core dual Xeon Platinum build starts at USD 279 against Liquid Web’s USD 420 regular rate for 16 núcleos. That is 3.5x the cores for two thirds of the price. Support differs, e isso importa: InterServer sells management as a paid add-on, while Liquid Web lists self-managed and fully managed options on this line. No amount of managed support closes a gap that size for a compute-bound job, Apesar.
Then hardware currency. Reserved virtual cores tend to sit on older silicon, because that is the hardware whose capacity a provider can afford to lock to single tenants. Contabo’s split says it outright: zen 2 EPYC under the VDS line, Genoa and Turin under the dedicated one.
Disk capacity is the third. The largest VDS in this comparison carries 720 GB de NVMe, and that is the ceiling, not a starting point. InterServer’s stocked 28-core box ships with two 24 TB SATA drives at USD 236 por mês. Once your working data passes 720 GB, the virtual tier is not a choice you get to make.
Último, ao controle. Kernel, RAID level, BIOS, PCI passthrough, out-of-band console. On bare metal these are settings. On a VDS they are the host’s business, and support will tell you so.
The Costs That Do Not Appear in the Headline Price
Four traps, one per provider, all documented on their own pages.
OVHcloud’s installation fee equals one month. Every Eco server listed shows it. KS-5 at USD 19.90 monthly carries a USD 19.90 taxa de instalação. Its 48-core RISE-XL at USD 354 carries a USD 354 1. Your first month costs double the advertised rate. There’s one live exception. OVHcloud is waiving the setup fee on the RISE-1 in its Mumbai region until 29 setembro 2026, while stocks last. That’s a 6-core Xeon-E box at USD 64.
Liquid Web’s discount lasts two months. The 6-core plan is USD 87 for two months, então USD 174 from the third. That’s an exact 2.0x step-up, and the same doubling applies across all four tiers. Its own footnote adds that promotions are new accounts only and do not apply to upgrades of existing servers. Two months is short enough that the promotional price is close to irrelevant to your annual budget.
Contabo’s headline rate needs 24 meses. Cloud VDS S is EUR 39.20 excluding VAT on that term against EUR 58.31 sem isso, so the commitment is worth 1.49x para você. Minimum initial contract is one month, which means the short-term door is open, just more expensive.
Hetzner moved the goalposts in June. Hetzner raised prices on all dedicated servers and cloud plans at every location on 15 Junho 2026 às 08:00 CEST, while cutting one-time setup fees on most dedicated servers. Existing contracts and the Server Auction were exempt. The AX41’s zero setup fee is a result of that trade. Here’s the side effect nobody advertises: the Server Auction’s cheapest listing was EUR 59.70 per month at 17:35 CEST on 16 setembro 2026. Isso é EUR 0.70 above the brand-new AX41. Hetzner’s used-hardware channel has stopped being the cheap route in.
How to Choose Between a Dedicated Server and a VDS
Below are five situations. Each one leads with the number that actually decides it.
Despesas: abaixo de USD 70 por mês, Linux admin in-house, audience in Europe. Take the Hetzner AX41 at USD 69.00 with zero setup and no minimum term. Skip Contabo’s Cloud VDS S: it saves you USD 15.18 a month and costs you 40 GB de RAM, which is the 2.1x-per-GB penalty from earlier. Spend the USD 15.18 em outro lugar.
Carga de trabalho: a nested hypervisor. You need to run VMs inside your server. Proxmox or KVM guests rule out an ordinary VPS at Contabo by its own documentation. The Max Performance tier at USD 53.82 is the cheapest entry, and a dedicated server is the fallback if you outgrow it. If those guests run Windows Server with Hyper-V, go straight to bare metal, because Contabo states Hyper-V will not work on a VDS.
Equipe: sem administrador de sistema. An outage costs you more than USD 200 uma hora. Go to Liquid Web, the only provider here that sells a fully managed option on its VDS line rather than leaving you the OS. Its 6-core, 32 GB build lists at USD 174 por mês. You’ll have to price the managed tier in the configurator, Apesar, because the page doesn’t publish the two levels separately. Skip InterServer’s USD 149 Ryzen 9900X, even though it doubles your cores and your RAM: management there is a paid add-on. You’re buying staff, not silicon.
Armazenamento: passado 720 GB of working data. InterServer’s stocked 28-core box with 128 GB and two 24 TB SATA drives is USD 236 por mês. The biggest VDS here stops at 720 GB, so this is less a comparison than a fork in the road. If it is throughput rather than capacity you need, nosso guia para orçamento de servidores dedicados covers the NVMe options.
Floor: abaixo de USD 25 por mês, and it only has to be a real machine. OVHcloud Kimsufi KS-5 at USD 19.90 mais um dólar 19.90 first-month fee. Nothing on the virtual side competes at this price, since Contabo’s cheapest is 2.7x more. Check stock before you plan around it, and expect a 2017-era Xeon on a 300 para 500 Porta Mbps.
perguntas frequentes
Is a VDS cheaper than a dedicated server?
Often not, and that surprises most buyers. Contabo’s 6-core Cloud VDS S is USD 53.82 por mês. Hetzner’s 6-core AX41 is USD 69.00. So the VDS wins on the sticker, then loses on contents: 24 GB of RAM against 64 GB. Higher up the range the sticker flips too. Liquid Web charges USD 174 para 6 virtual cores while InterServer charges USD 149 para 12 physical ones. Tratar “VDS is the budget option” as a claim to check, not a rule.
Is Contabo’s Cloud VDS S better value than Hetzner’s AX41?
Only if you want snapshots or nested virtualization. On raw specification the AX41 wins clearly, and for only USD 15.18 mais por mês. Count it up: 64 GB contra 24 GB, two NVMe drives against one, uma 1 Gbit/s port against 250 Mbit / s, plus unlimited traffic. Contabo’s advantages are the hypervisor features and a 24-month price you can lock. Hetzner counters with no minimum term at all.
Can I run Proxmox or Hyper-V on a VDS?
Proxmox yes, at some providers. Contabo documents that nested virtualization works on its Virtual Dedicated Servers and its dedicated servers, but not on its standard VPS range. The required CPU features aren’t exposed there. Hyper-V is the exception: Contabo states plainly that pairing a VDS with Windows Server leaves Hyper-V non-functional. Check the provider’s own support pages before you buy, because this is a host-side switch you can’t flip yourself.
How fast can you actually get a dedicated server in 2026?
Two minutes, at the low end of the market. OVHcloud quotes delivery in 120 seconds for the Kimsufi KS-5 in its Canada East region, and InterServer holds stocked “Compre agora” servers for immediate setup. Custom builds with specific drive or NIC requirements still take longer. o “dedicated servers take days” line in older comparisons describes a market that has moved on.
Which handles a busy MySQL database better, a VDS or bare metal?
Metal puro, once the working set stops fitting in RAM. That is the moment disk latency starts setting your query times, and you want the drives and the kernel’s I/O scheduler under your own control. Below that line a VDS is fine, and Contabo’s 180 GB of NVMe on Cloud VDS S suits a database of a few tens of gigabytes. Passado 720 GB, which is the largest VDS disk in this comparison, the tier runs out of storage before it runs out of CPU. At that point the decision gets made for you.
Veredicto Final
Buy the servidor dedicado if what you need is compute, memory or disk. The market has quietly repriced in its favour. Hetzner AX41 delivers 64 GB and six physical cores for USD 69.00, with no setup fee and no contract. InterServer puts 12 núcleos e 64 GB a USD 149 with IPMI. OVHcloud will hand you a working machine for USD 19.90 in two minutes. None of those has a virtual equivalent at the price.
Buy the VDS if what you need is the hypervisor. Instantâneos, minute-scale rebuilds and nested virtualization are real features with no bare-metal equivalent, e Contabo's Max Performance tier sells them at USD 53.82. Go in knowing you’re paying for those features rather than saving money. Contabo’s own catalogue prices the trade at three times the cores for the same EUR 46.65 if you drop the isolation requirement. Teia líquida is the pick when what you’re short of is staff rather than cores. It’s the only name here selling a managed tier on this product. Budget against USD 174, not the two-month USD 87, and confirm the managed rate before you commit.
One habit worth keeping: read the term and the setup line before the monthly figure. Um dólar 354 taxa de instalação, a promotional rate that expires in eight weeks, a 24-month lock. All three sit in the small print of the pages above. Any one of them moves your real annual cost more than the difference you were busy comparing.
Still working out which tier you belong in? Nosso VPS versus dedicated comparison covers the step below this one. If the VDS range here reads as too big a jump, nosso guia para hospedagem de CPU dedicada lists reserved-core plans under USD 50.
