HostGator has sold hosting since 2002 and calls itself “Texas raised”, naming Austin and Houston as home. Its About page doesn’t name the owner. Newfold Digital lists HostGator among its brands, next to Bluehost and BigRock. Most products run on cPanel, the control panel most shared hosts use.

What You Actually Get on a Shared Plan

Reviewers rarely praise a HostGator feature by name. What they praise is the person on the chat. So the list below is about what matters once you’re a customer, not about what the plan cards advertise.

• Free SSL and a CDN: every plan includes a Let’s Encrypt certificate and Cloudflare’s CDN (a network that caches your pages closer to visitors).
• Developer tools on every tier: SSH (secure command-line access), WP-CLI (a command-line tool for managing WordPress) and a staging site for testing changes. That’s unusual at USD 3.75 un mes.
• Backups with conditions: HostGator takes “cortesía” copias de seguridad, but restoring one costs USD 49. Its terms also drop any shared account over 20 GB from off-site backup, except databases.

The same help center adds that HostGator’s servers aren’t HIPAA compliant, which rules out storing US patient health data.

No independent test of HostGator’s speed or uptime from the past six months turned up in our search. HostGator’s own status page is the best record available, and summer 2026 was busy. It logged nine incidents in nine weeks.

July began with a partial outage on 2 July that hit hosting, email and DNS (the service that points your domain at your server). An intermittent hosting incident closed on 8 julio. A major outage followed on 15 y 16 julio, then a website and email incident closed on 21 julio. A VPS incident closed on 25 julio. En 11 August a three-hour major outage hit hosting and mail. HostGator blamed the July outage on “an issue in one of our vendor facilities”. The incident opened at 4:37 pm EST on 15 July and was marked resolved at 1:04 a.m, acerca de 8.5 horas después. Support complaints describe loops more than rudeness. One reviewer with a hacked server got ticket replies every 24 horas, each asking one new question. Others describe waiting days for DNS fixes while their email and website stayed down. The worst cases involve sites that were never restored.

What Reddit Adds

The July outage produced a thread in r/HostGator on 16 July titled “If your hostgator website is down, this is why”. One commenter wrote that it had “been 8 horas” and they had “a lot of angry clients”. Another said customers stay only because migrating feels daunting. A reply pointed out that almost every host imports cPanel accounts.

Two warnings came up in more than one thread. The first is billing after cancellation. One user says auto-renewal switched itself back on after they cancelled, and another found a USD 112 charge at least five years after leaving. A third needed a support request just to remove a saved card. The second warning is lost sites. One owner described eight years of posts gone after months of DNS fixes. The replies suggested rebuilding the site from the Wayback Machine.

The weak spots are the ones you meet in year four or during an outage, not on the sign-up page.

You’re counting on HostGator’s backups: each restore costs USD 49, and accounts over 20 GB lose off-site file backups. Keep your own copies somewhere else, whatever host you pick.

You’ll keep the site longer than three years: Baby’s USD 16.49 renewal is where the value disappears. A host with a smaller first-to-renewal gap works out cheaper over six years.

You’re in India: HostGator India merged into BigRock in July 2025. Indian buyers now order from BigRock, a separate storefront with its own prices and plans.

The self-managed plans have the mildest renewal in HostGator’s catalog. The page doesn’t print their term, but the buy links carry a two-year term. Managed plans are priced for a 36-month term.

Look at the NVMe 4 fila. The same specification renews at USD 9.35 self-managed and USD 68.99 gestionado, a 7.4x difference. That gap pays for cPanel and HostGator’s management. If you can run a Linux server yourself, it’s the best value HostGator sells.

But the status page tells customers to check “the SLA terms in your hosting agreement”.
