Features and Services

Funio sells hosting from an office in Verdun, Quebec, and says it has done so since 1999. It runs in English, French and Spanish, which is unusual and genuinely useful if you serve Quebec or Latin America.

One thing the site never tells you: Funio isn’t independent. Miss Group, a Swedish hosting group, bought Funio from Internap Corporation in a deal announced on 17 December 2019. Funio confirmed this itself in a public reply to a reviewer in March 2022, writing that it “is still Canadian and is owned by MissGroup”. The About page has a section headed “Our group”. It contains exactly one logo: Funio’s own.

Those resource caps deserve credit. Funio tells you the Economic plan gets 384 MB of RAM and half a CPU core. Rivals selling “unlimited” rarely publish a number at all.

Data Center Locations

Here’s where it gets vague. The homepage counter says “3 Data Centers”. No page on the site names a single one.

Funio’s own status page answers the question by accident. Three separate incidents are titled “Network issue in our provider’s data center”. So Funio rents capacity rather than owning it, which is fine and common, but it’s a long way from the impression that counter gives.

Performance Expectations

We found no independent speed benchmarks for Funio. What we did find is better: a public incident log going back to 2021.

Trend lines here are not reassuring. Funio logged 3 incidents in 2021, 5 in 2022, 6 in 2023, 6 in 2024 and 4 in 2025. In the first eight months of 2026 it logged 13. Four of those hit the same four shared servers, named s111 to s114, on 8 March, 30 May, 7 July and 17 August 2026. The July outage ran 18 hours.

Longer ones exist. Servers s101 to s104 were down for 57 hours in October 2025. A VPS incident in February 2024 ran 121 hours. Funio’s own website and customer portal went dark for 16 hours on 30 March 2026.

Customer Experience

Three public scores exist for Funio and they disagree sharply. One platform shows 4.4/5 from 131 reviews. A second shows 3.9/5 from 46. A third shows 4.3/10 from 36. Reading how each corpus was built explains the gap.

What Customers Praise

Support, overwhelmingly. Reviewers name agents, describe fast replies and mention getting help in French. A reseller of five years wrote in February 2024 that response times had actually improved. Several long-term customers describe a decade or more without wanting to move.

That 4.4 platform is lopsidedly positive. Of 125 reviews we could retrieve, 119 are five-star and 5 are four-star. Exactly one is negative.

Common Complaints

Complaints cluster around one theme, and it isn’t speed. It’s data disappearing.

A reviewer in January 2018 reported Funio emptying an email trash folder used as an archive. Another in November 2018 warned that Funio “reserves the right to empty your email bin without prior notice to reduce your disk space”. A third in April 2018 had files deleted outright. Funio’s public reply to that one is the striking part. It said the files “were deleted by mistake thinking they did not conform with our Acceptable Use Policy”.

Backups come up too. A customer who lost content in December 2017 was told in Funio’s reply that “backups remain the responsibility of customers”. The terms of service agree, promising only “all possible efforts” and instructing you to keep your own copy.

Two more worth knowing. In October 2019 a customer bought the Unlimited plan, advertised with 512 MB of RAM, and found the account capped at 384 MB. It took several emails to get fixed. In October 2020 a customer reported being charged 200 dollars on a 15 dollar auto-renewal, without consent.

Community Feedback (Reddit & Forums)

There isn’t any. Reddit, LowEndTalk and WebHostingTalk return nothing for Funio.

That silence matters given how the biggest corpus was built. Of the 125 reviews we retrieved from the 4.4 platform, 123 arrived through Funio’s own invitations and only 2 were written unprompted. One of those two unprompted reviews is the single negative in the entire file. It’s one star, dated 10 October 2024, titled “Don’t expect competent support”, about email blocking with no way to opt out. Funio never replied to it.

Those invitations also stopped. That corpus holds 30 reviews from 2021, 32 from 2022, 35 from 2023, 27 from 2024, one from April 2025 and none since. The platform itself flags that Funio has “no recent history of asking for reviews”. So a 4.4 score built almost entirely from solicited feedback has been frozen for over a year.

Support Quality

This is Funio’s genuine strength and the reviews are consistent about it. Support runs 24/7 by chat, ticket and phone, in three languages, with toll-free numbers. Funio also replies publicly to negative reviews on the platforms where it has a presence, which many hosts don’t.

One exception is telling. On the platform where 98% of reviews came from its own invitations, the single unprompted complaint went unanswered.

When to Use Funio

There’s a narrow but real set of buyers this host fits.

Ideal For

French-speaking customers in Quebec: Genuine French support with local phone numbers and a Verdun office is hard to find. Most of Funio’s review corpus is in French for a reason.

Small resellers who want a person to talk to: The reseller tiers include cPanel/WHM and the support reputation is the selling point. Reviewers running client sites for years are the most positive group in the file.

Buyers who want published resource limits: Have you been burned by an “unlimited” plan that throttled silently? Funio telling you it’s 512 MB and one core is worth something.

You’ll Appreciate It If

• You need support in French or Spanish, because Funio staffs all three languages
• You want to test risk-free, because the 30-day refund is unconditional and clearly written
• You prefer managed to DIY, because the VPS range is fully managed with no root access

When NOT to Use Funio

Several situations rule it out, and the pricing model is the first one.

Look Elsewhere If

You’re shopping on the advertised price: Every discount here expires after 30 days. If USD 3.18 a month is what your budget allows, Funio’s real price is USD 12.71 and you should compare on that number instead.

You need a meaningful uptime guarantee: Funio markets “100% Network and Power Uptime”. The document behind it is dated 9 August 2011 and covers only two things: network connectivity, measured by failed pings, and data center power. It explicitly excludes “hardware or software malfunctions”, slowdowns and planned maintenance. Most of Funio’s own 2026 incidents were server failures, which fall outside it.

You can’t tolerate repeat outages: The same four servers failed four times in six months this year. If your site is on s111 through s114, that’s your year.

Red Flags for Your Situation

• You’d need to claim an SLA credit: Funio wants the claim within 7 days of month end. It must include at least three traceroute commands captured during the outage. “Any incomplete reclamation form will be discarded.”
• Your data must never be touched: Multiple reviewers report mailboxes and files deleted without warning, and the terms make backups your responsibility.
• You run resource-heavy sites: Shared plans cap at 1 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores even on the USD 60.41 tier.
• You want current software versions: Funio still lists PostgreSQL 10.23, a release that reached end of life in November 2022. PHP goes back to 5.2.

We assess how upfront Funio is, using its own pages and documents:

• Company Information: Limited. The office address and three phone numbers are easy to find. The owner isn’t. Miss Group has held Funio since 2019 and appears nowhere on the site, including in the section headed “Our group”.
• Pricing Transparency: Good. This is better than most. Regular prices sit next to promotional ones on every card, and the first-month limit is stated. It’s a footnote rather than a headline, and the dagger marking it is missing from the cheapest plans, but the number is there.
• Technical Documentation: Limited. RAM and CPU caps are published, which is rare and good. Data center locations are not published at all. Backup retention is given three different ways. The comparison table says 48 hours and 7 days, the same page’s feature list says 14 days, and the VPS page says 15 days.
• Terms & Policies: Limited. The refund policy is clear, generous and honestly scoped. The uptime guarantee is 15 years old, narrower than its marketing, and hard to claim against.

Overall Transparency: Mixed. Funio is more honest about resource limits than most budget hosts and more evasive about who owns it. The clearest sign nobody maintains the copy is the homepage itself. One counter block claims 21,846 customers, 141 countries and 21+ years. A paragraph further down the same page claims “more than 15 years” and “over 19,000 customers in more than 170 countries”. The About page says 20,000 customers in over 100 countries. Three sets of numbers, one company.

• Bounced payment: a CAD 20 penalty fee.
• Custom work: CAD 125 per hour.
• Refund exclusions: domains, SSL certificates, bandwidth billing, hourly work and setup fees are all outside the 30-day guarantee.

Pricing Verdict

Judge Funio on the regular price, because that’s what you’ll pay. USD 11.65 a month for one website with 384 MB of RAM is not cheap. USD 22.25 for the Unlimited tier is above the market for shared hosting with a 512 MB ceiling.

Prices are also moving. Funio raised its entry shared plan from USD 9.99 to USD 10.99 a month between 14 June and 16 July 2025. It then went to USD 11.65 between 16 May and 18 August 2026. That’s a 16.6% rise in about fourteen months on an unchanged spec. The old USD 9.99 price is still sitting in the page source, commented out.

Funio is a real, staffed, functioning host with good multilingual support, honest resource limits and a genuinely clean refund policy. It’s also a host whose advertised prices last 30 days and whose reliability got worse in 2026.

The Bottom Line

Scores of 4.4/5, 3.9/5 and 4.3/10 across three platforms tell you this is a divisive host, and the split is explainable. The high score is 98% invitation-driven and hasn’t moved since April 2025. The complaints are older but consistent, and they’re about data being deleted rather than sites being slow.
